In honor of the character’s 75th anniversary, director David Ayer Tweeted out the very first official image of Jared Leto as the Joker in Suicide Squad last night. As expected, it’s drastically different than anything we’ve seen in the past and a huge departure from both Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger’s version of the character. That being said, it’s pretty damn awesome and Leto has once again proven himself as an actor who’s capable of a tremendous physical transformation. Now that we've had some time to take in the character's new look and get acquainted with it, it's time to analyze it a bit further and see if there's any clues as to what Ayer has in store for us once his film hits theatres. Join us as we look at 5 key takeaways from this first official look at Jared Leto's Joker.

10 Actors Who Could Play Incredible Versions Of The Joker

The Joker might just be the best villain in all of fiction. I know that is a stretch, and some people may have some issues with that statement, but think about it. From his first appearance in the comics, to his debut on the campy show, to his most recent representation by the late Heath Ledger, he is a wildly varying villain.

Okay, bare with me here, I have to do some explaining.

For those who don’t know, Tommy Flanagan is the actor who plays Chibs on Sons of Anarchy, and here is the fine print on why he is destined to play the Joker at some point in his career. You see those scars on his face? Those are ACTUAL JOKER SCARS. They’re called the “Glasgow Smile” and were performed on this man’s face when he was attacked outside a nightclub. The intruders literally cut his fucking face into a Joker smile, long before that was even a thing.

They are some of the most notable scars in cinema and TV, and would work greatly to benefit the character he would be representing. On top of that, if and when you have seen this man act, he is always playing scary motherfuckers. He is aware of how he looks, and he plays off that. So why not just cast a guy who needs no makeup to play the Joker and let him do his anarchist best?

I know some of you may think he would be small fries compared to some of the other names on this list, but let’s not forget, we all underestimated Heath Ledger, too. The truth is, Flanagan LIVED though what Heath Ledger’s character implied he lived through, which could add some real, unsettling reality to the character.
