8 Superhero Fights We Want To See On The Big Screen Next

The superhero vs. superhero trend is properly in full swing right now. This month we’ve had Daredevil vs. Punisher in Daredevil season two and The Dark Knight vs. Supes in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, while next month sees Captain America duke it out with Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War. For whatever reason, that fixture of geeky conversations (“who would win in a fight if…”) is being currently being mined by those who make superhero adaptations. So, assuming this trend continues, what other superpowered punch-ups do we next want to see? There are a heck of a lot of them to pick from - for a bunch of people united by their dedication to stopping evil, superheroes sure do find it hard to get along. Here, though, you'll find our eight picks for comic book character fights that we want to see on the big screen next. There’s just one stipulation for this list: the entries have to be based on conflicts that have actually happened in the comics and not just fights that fans have dreamt up. 8) The Avengers/Defenders War OK, this one stretches our rule about having to be based on the comics, as the Defenders team that fought the Avengers isn’t remotely similar to the one that will form in Netflix’s upcoming The Defenders series. Still, fans are eager to see Marvel’s movie and television superhero teams crossover so a full-on battle between the groups would be immensely satisfying. While the two teams have fought on other occasions, the best brawl between them happened in "The Avengers/Defenders War" storyline from the 1970s. It saw the likes of Dr. Strange take on Black Panther and Black Mantis, Hulk vs. Thor and Iron Man coming to blows with Hawkeye (something we might actually see in Civil War). In an adaptation, these could be swapped for, say, Daredevil vs. Captain America, Jessica Jones vs. Black Widow and Luke Cage vs. Iron Man. Who wouldn’t want to see that? 7) Shazam vs. Superman DC’s Shazam, also confusingly known as Captain Marvel, is soon to get his own movie - which is a surprise as the hero would seemingly be a poor fit for the studio’s gritty shared universe. As you may or may not know, he's usually portrayed as a kid named Billy Batson until he gains superpowers from saying the world ‘Shazam!’. As such, DC may have a hard time getting people to take the character seriously. However, if they adapted his fight with Superman to the big screen, we think it would considerably help. In Elseworlds story "Kingdom Come," which sees the Justice League fight it out with a new breed of superpowered vigilantes, Supes and Shazam come to blows. Though the two are pretty evenly powered, Shazam gets the edge on the Man of Steel thanks to the repeated use of his magic lightning bolt. Now that they've done it with Ben Affleck’s Batman, giving Superman a beating is clearly a surefire way of introducing a DC hero. 6) Thor vs. Silver Surfer Fantastic Four fans are still mourning Fox’s failure to reignite the big screen career of Marvel’s First Family last year – partly since that means we won’t see the associated Silver Surfer on screen again for a while. Hopefully Marvel nab the rights for him back soon, though, because if they do, a great way to introduce the cosmic hero would be adapt his classic fight with Thor. In Silver Surfer #4, by Stan Lee and John Buscema, Loki tricks the pair into believing the other is evil – causing the Thunder God and Galactus’ former Herald to properly try and destroy the other. Eventually, of course, they realize they have been duped and team up to take on Loki. Many comic fans still consider this superhero skirmish to be the out-and-out greatest of its kind. While it doesn't have the 'clash of the titans' status of Batman V Superman or Civil War, the cosmic element would still be great to see in live-action. 5) Deadpool vs. Wolverine Unfortunately, this one is pretty unlikely. Even though Deadpool has finally made it to the big screen in the way he deserves, Hugh Jackman is only making one more appearance as Wolverine before he sheaths his adamantium claws forever. Still, it would definitely be amazing if this could somehow happen. Though Logan and Wade have come to blows in the comics, their fights haven’t really set comicdom alight. A movie which saw the pair going at it certainly would, though. Apart from being evenly-matched opponents – both are Weapon X creations with healing powers – Deadpool and Wolverine are probably the X-Men franchise’s two most successful characters. Ryan Reynolds and Deadpool director Tim Miller have said they would love to make a Deadpool vs. Wolverine movie, and Jackman has confessed his admiration for the Deadpool character before. Could they perhaps coax him to play the character just one more time? 4) World War Hulk After Hulk drifted into space at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, fans were hoping it would lead into a movie of ‘"Planet Hulk," the comic story which sees the Not-So-Jolly Green Giant take over an alien world. Let’s hope it does, so that we can get a movie based on the follow up storyline, "World War Hulk." After the likes of Iron Man and Mr. Fantastic agree to send Hulk into space, the spaceship they use explodes and kills Hulk’s pregnant wife. Blaming them for her death, he returns to Earth to get his revenge. You remember how hard it was to control Hulk in The Avengers? Well, imagine them having to take on a grieving, extra-angry version. So far, the movies have probably made the character a little too agreeable, as in the comics he rarely lasts on the Avengers team for long. A "World War Hulk" movie, then, would remind people that “the other guy” is not to be messed with. 3) Spider-Man Versus Wolverine Again, sadly, the chances of this battle between two of Marvel's most perennially popular characters making it to the big screen doesn’t seem too likely. Apart from the aforementioned reason of Jackman bowing out of the role, Spider-Man and Wolverine belong to different studios. But, come on, it’s Spider-Man and Wolverine – how could we not want to see them battle it out in the big screen? Plus, they did almost crossover in the past. In 1987’s "Spider-Man Versus Wolverine", Spidey gets involved with some secret espionage stuff which puts him in conflict with Wolverine. The fight is a fascinating one as it reveals that Spidey, if he really went for it, is a hugely powerful fighter – apparently he can kill someone with just one punch. In fact, the tussle could have ended with them killing each other, if they hadn’t come to their senses in time. 2) Avengers vs. X-Men The deal between Sony and Marvel that saw Spider-Man brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe was unprecedented and shows that these competing studios can work together. Let’s hope Fox is taking notice, then, and that they are thinking of teaming up with Marvel to give us an Avengers vs X-Men movie. In the comics, the two teams start a full-on war when they find out that Hope Summers is destined to be the new host of the Phoenix Force – something that the mutants think is their salvation but the Avengers believe is humanity’s downfall. The result is a massive superpowered fight for survival. Both teams have their moments of heroism and villainy, so it would be a perfect follow-up to Civil War, where fans are split between Team Cap and Team Iron Man. This one is a bit of long shot, yes, but it could happen. Fingers crossed, everybody! 1) JLA/Avengers This is the ultimate superhero vs. superhero battle. A fight that is waged every day by comic book fans – the question of whether Marvel or DC is better – it would be fanboy and girl heaven if 2004’s "JLA/Avengers" storyline was adapted for the big screen. Yes, there is probably no way in hell that the two movie studios would agree to team up but hey, we can dream, can’t we? The comic sees the two superhero teams brought together across universes by the all-powerful Grandmaster. All the big-hitters you could ask for are involved, resulting in some mouth-watering conflicts like Batman V Captain America and Superman going at it with Thor. Despite saying above that the studios wouldn’t work together, this joint venture would surely be a massive blockbuster event which would generate a lot of box office for both parties. Come on, guys, no one would lose here. Well, except whichever bunch of superheroes was beaten by the other…
