Bottoms Up: 11 Iconic Cinematic Male Boozehounds

For those of you who don't know, I've started expressing my current beer obsession in the form of written word over at The Mason Jar - a drinking blog that's a companion site to the current iPhone app titled "Sindig - Drink Explorer's Club." It's kind of like Instagram for enthusiastic drink connoisseurs (download the app and follow me!). So why do I mention this, besides the shameless self-promotion? Simple, because alcohol is everywhere, especially in cinema, so why not do some cinematic drink exploring as well?

The Godfather of frat comedies, John Belushi’s role as John Blutarsky in Animal House is nothing short of legendary. Bluto is that mysterious drunkard at the party that nobody forgets. Whether it’s starting a Toga party, dancing outlandishly, breaking guitars, or just causing general havoc, Bluto is the college frat kid everyone wants to know, but none of us probably want to be. That being said, there’s a reason why to this day current university students proudly display posters of John Blutarsky wearing that famed “College” sweatshirt – because John Blutarsky has forever engrained himself in Hollywood’s comedy Hall Of Fame.

Why is Animal House such a special movie? Transcending generations, it’s one of the only comedies my father and I can agree on. Frat humor is the same year to year – legacies pick up where their elders left off, upholding the traditions of hazing, beer crushing and massive partying that Greek life was built on. John Blutarsky may have had a 0.0 average and pulled revolting pranks in front of women, but his love for fraternal brotherhood always broke through in dire moments of tragedy, even if his speeches included lines about the Germans bombing Pearl Harbor. In the words of Boon – “Forget it, he’s on a roll.”

It’s a shame that actor John Belushi couldn’t continue to keep us laughing because of an untimely death, but thankfully he gifted us with the character of Bluto before he left – one of the greatest cinematic drinkers in history.
