7) Diablo

Unlike the other villains mentioned in this feature so far, Diablo is at least given a satisfying backstory in Suicide Squad. However, despite him getting a cool fight sequence in the finale act before he makes a memorable (if somewhat unnecessary) sacrifice, there’s so much which doesn’t make sense with the character that he ultimately underwhelms despite the solid performance from Jay Hernandez.

After handing himself in for the murder of his family, why would Diablo then incinerate an entire prison yard of inmates before deciding to give up his powers? After refusing to fight for the entire movie, he does so after some gentle teasing from Deadshot and then bizarrely calls the other members of Task Force X his family despite having barely interacted with them. Cool powers or not, it’s poor writing which ultimately lets this villain down.
