Alien

A Complete Guide To The Alien Cinematic Universe

When Dan O’Bannon first conceived of his science fiction/action/horror story - about an alien hunting a crew through a spaceship – he could little have known that his idea would lead to a multi-billion-dollar multimedia franchise, one that would still be adding instalments over four decades and counting. That simple premise for Alien – which, in its execution, was essentially a haunted house horror film set in space – launched novelizations, video games, comic books and, most crucially, an ongoing film series that now mixes genre and franchise to build its cohesive universe.

Notable universe developments: A Xenomorph-Predator hybrid rampages through a Colorado town; the military have knowledge of the extra-terrestrial species; the Weyland-Yutani Corporation are seen to be collecting Predator technology, in addition to Xenomorphs.

Picking up the story immediately after its predecessor, a Predator spaceship is departing Earth when a chest-burster explodes from the body of a dead Predator. Because the gestating Xenomorph takes on characteristics of its host, the creature unleashed is a Predalien, and it rampages through the ship. It makes its way onto a Predator scout ship, which is then damaged by weapons fire – and the scout ship containing some Predators and the Predalien crashes back to Earth, in a densely forested area in Colorado.

A Predator manages to send a distress signal back to the Predator Homeworld before dying, as the Predalien continues its killing spree. It then escapes from the wreckage with some face-huggers. A Predator named Wolf receives the signal, and travels to Earth alone to effectively clean-up the mess that has been created. Upon arrival, he uses advanced technology to destroy any evidence of the crash, the Predators, and the aliens, and then begins to track the Xenomorph in order to kill it.

It’s already impregnated and killed a number of townsfolk and various individuals are caught up in the carnage, including newly released convict Dallas Howard (Steven Pasquale); Sheriff Eddie Morales (John Ortiz); students Ricky Howard (Johnny Lewis), Dale (David Paetkau), and Jesse (Kristen Hager); and a young family comprising ex-military officer Kelly O’Brien (Reiko Aylesworth), Tim O’Brien (Sam Trammell), and Molly (Ariel Gade). After each of these groups experience their own encounters with the Predalien – including one in which Tim O’Brien is killed – they all descend upon a sporting goods store to gather weapons, and team up.

A National Guard deployment arrives, but is quickly killed by the aliens. The Predator, Wolf, continues his pursuit of the Xenomorph menace, making his presence known to the group of human survivors congregating in the sporting goods store. After making radio contact with the military, the group learn from Colonel Stevens (Robert Joy) that an evacuation point has been designated for survivors, but Kelly O’Brien suspects foul play. The group splits up, with the Sheriff taking some survivors to the military rendezvous point, and Kelly O’Brien leading a group to the hospital – in the hope of escaping in a helicopter themselves.

However, the hospital has been infiltrated by aliens, with patients having been impregnated by face-huggers. Wolf arrives and engages the aliens in battle, allowing survivors to reach the rooftop. As they lift-off in the hospital helicopter, Wolf continues to fight the Predalien until a military jet arrives and drops a nuclear bomb on the town – obliterating everything and everyone still there. The hospital helicopter is brought down in the woods by the shockwave, and survivors are rescued by the military.

A businesswoman named Ms. Yutani arrives, and the military take possession of a Predator weapon. As they hand it over to Yutani, she states that the world is not ready to embrace such advanced technology. The ensuing exchange indicates the belief that the world does not belong to humanity.
