13 Key Takeaways From The Deadpool Trailer

Fans have been hoping to see justice done to the Merc with a Mouth since he became the Jerk with the Sewn-Up Mouth in the much maligned X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but even though Ryan Reynolds always remained adamant that he wanted to return to the role and right those wrongs by giving us the REAL Deadpool, as time passed, it seemed more and more unlikely. But then that test footage leaked, and the rest is history. This week, we got our first official look at the insanely anticipated (and just plain insane looking) Deadpool movie via green and red band trailers (the latter of which can be seen above). The R-rated footage was as full of blood and F-bombs as expected, but the more family-friendly version also contained some new shots that were not present in the San Diego Comic-Con footage - and a few extra little Wade Wilson gags right at the end, too. Join us, then, as we discuss the most revealing, interesting, or just plain bat-shit crazy shots from both trailers, and dissect what they mean for the final product. 1) Is Morena Baccarin Playing Vanessa Carlyle? Wade the mercenary and Vanessa the stripper - it was always gonna be a match made in a slightly messed-up heaven, right? Though we only have her first name to go on, Morena Baccarin is almost certainly playing Vanessa Carlyle, who in the Marvel comics is the shape-shifting mutant known as Copycat. Whether she'll have those (or any) powers in the movie remains to be seen, but with so much other crazy stuff going on, there's a good chance the character's superhuman abilities will have been scaled back considerably/completely. 2) Wade Wilson Will Also Break The Fourth Wall In the trailer, we see Wade preparing to undergo the procedure that will give him superpowers... and leave him with a face that would give even Freddy Kruger nightmares. During this scene, he asks them to make sure that his superhero costume is not green, which is obviously a little dig at Warner Bros.' Green Lantern movie, which starred Ryan Reynolds in the title role. According to Miller, it was decided early on that Wade will only break the fourth wall when he's suited up as Deadpool, so this little quip shows that they're bending their own rules a touch. 3) How Powerful Will Angel Dust Be? Former MMA fighter turned actress Gina Carano will be starring in the film as the villainous Angel Dust. In the comics, the character is a mutant member of the Morlocks, with the power to elevate her adrenaline levels to provide her with super strength. We don't know for sure if the movie version will sport the same abilities, but she certainly looks to be pretty strong in the footage we see in the trailer. And, according to Carano, Angel Dust will be portrayed as Ajax's right-hand woman, who previously went through the same program (don't call it Weapon X!) that alters Wilson. Given that, we're assuming that the Angel Dust we see here will be pretty close to the one we got in the comics, who is only a very minor character and not actually a villain at all. Could we see Miss Dust switch sides in the movie, perhaps? 4) Blind Al Won't Be Watered Down The character seen above is named Blind Al, and will be played by Leslie Uggams (Roots, Nurse Jackie). In the comics, Deadpool has quite a bizarre relationship with his prisoner/house-guest, showing cruelty and warmth to her in equal measure. Al proves more than a match for him though - especially when it comes to the put-downs that they regularly trade. In the red band trailer, she comments that Wade sounds like he has a "dick in his mouth" when he speaks, but we can't have that kind of talk in a family friendly version, so in the green band trailer, she simply calls him a douche instead. Al is actually a former British Intelligence officer and helps Deadpool out on a number of occasions in the comics, so it'll be interesting to see how large a role she has in the movie. 5) The R Rating Will Be Put To Good Use Something else absent from the green band trailer are the shots of bare bums in a strip club, and Wade and Vanessa getting it on. Given their usual target audience, superhero movies and sex scenes/nudity do not tend to go together - so when a rare R-rated comic book flick like Watchmen or Kick-Ass comes along, they usually take full advantage. Deadpool, it seems, is no exception. 6) Homage Is Paid To The Test Footage This funny shot from the bridge and the ones following it with Wilson laying waste to a gang of goons are all from the leaked test footage, recreated here in live action. Had that footage not found its way online, this movie may never have happened, as the massive fan support forced the studio to pay attention and they threw everything behind the project. Ryan Reynolds got his wish and will suit up again (well, technically for the first time) as Deadpool - though after the rotten luck he's had with comic book movies up to now, he's actually sworn this will be his last time playing a superhero! Don't worry, we're sure Deadpool 2 doesn't count. 7) Deadpool Has His Accelerated Healing Powers That's gotta hurt! Most likely not for long though, as this shot would seem to confirm that Wilson will have his accelerated healing powers from the comics... unless of course he just has a very high pain threshold, and is happy to continue slaughtering bad guys with a large hole in his arm. You never know... 8) What Role Will Colossus Play In The Story? If this big shiny dude looks familiar, that's because it's X-Men character Colossus! Daniel Cudmore played Piotr Nikolaievitch Rasputin in three previous X-flicks, and though he was asked to reprise the role, he turned it down since the character would be depicted only in his CGI metal form for the duration of the movie. So, actor/stuntman Andre Tricoteux (Seventh Son) was brought in to play the big guy via motion capture. Who we'll actually be hearing when Colossus speaks remains a mystery, though. In the original script for Deadpool, Colossus is also hunting Ajax, which brings him into contact (and conflict) with the Merc with a Mouth. The two eventually form an uneasy alliance, but it remains to be seen if that's how things will eventually play out in the final version. 9) We Love Brianna Hildebrand's "Deadpan Goth" Take On Negasonic Teenage Warhead Despite her odd name, this character does not have any kind of nuclear-based powers in the comics. Instead, she's actually a telepath with precognitive abilities. Apparently, several other mutants were considered for Colossus' sidekick (including original New Mutant Cannonball), but when director Tim Miller shared Negasonic's name with writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, they loved it so much that they settled on her and wrote her into the script. 10) Things Are Going To Get Ugly Weasel (T.J. Miller) has some creatively foul-mouthed ways to describe his pal Wade's face in these shots. As horrific as the character look here, in the comics, he has appeared even worse at times - with some artists choosing to depict him as a decaying, zombie-like monstrosity. According to the director, this isn't the only stage of make-up, either, so expect to see Reynolds under even more hideous prosthetics at some point in the movie. 11) There Will Be Blood Yeah, there will be blood. We've been promised a "hard R" take on Deadpool, and along with the sex and bad language, that means copious amounts of claret being spilled over the course of the film. Just to hammer that home, one of the final shots in the red band trailer sees Wade demonstrating some of that super-agility while blasting out the brains of three goons at the same time. He's so happy with it, too, that he's going to celebrate by going home and touching himself, apparently. 12) Ajax Looks Badass Deadpool clashes katanas with former Game Of Thrones actor Ed Skrein as Ajax. We know this chap was an enforcer for "The Workshop" that provided Wade with his powers and ... well, drove him insane, and it seems that the vengeful Merc with a Mouth will catch up with him at some point in the movie. Is this a shot from the final battle perhaps? It's been confirmed that the movie's time-frame won't be linear, so it's very hard to tell, but either way, it looks like Ajax will be a formidable opponent for our hero. 13) Gotta Love That Fourth Wall Breaking! Finally, we have this extra little tag at the end of the green band footage, which is actually one of the funniest parts of either trailer. Deadpool pops up to tempt younger viewers to head on over to his official website and check out the much more NSFW version, which contains "big boy curse words." Wade reminds the kids to ask their mothers for permission first, and then to get her to call him. After all, she has the number.
