Maleficent Star Being Eyed To Play Supergirl In The DCEU

Just as Robert Pattinson will relaunch the Bat-mythos in The Batman, Warner Bros. is keen to restart the Kryptonian side of the DC universe soon. They're holding off on rebooting Superman himself just yet, though, and instead will bring Supergirl to the big screen for the first time since 1986's infamous flop starring Helen Slater. There's every reason a Girl of Steel movie would work nowadays, however, especially if the studio finds the right star.

And on that note, we’ve heard about one individual in particular who WB’s eyeing. We Got This Covered’s been informed by a source that Elle Fanning is on the wishlist to play the lead in the Supergirl standalone movie. The Maleficent actress can often be seen in fan-casts to portray Kara Zor-El in the DCEU, so the fandom might be able to get behind her casting if that’s where WB decided to go.

We should also note that Fanning is just one of a few names who the studio’s eyeing right now and as of yet, there’s no clear frontrunner. The casting process hasn’t formally begun, either, so it doesn’t sound like any of these actresses have officially auditioned just yet. Supergirl could shoot as early as next spring, though, so we may get an answer on who’s snagged the role before 2019 is up.

We’ve previously been told that the pic will move away from the established continuity of Man of Steel, taking place in a rebooted timeline. As mentioned above, the movie won’t feature Supes, but will likely sow the seeds for a new actor to don the cape and tights down the line. Assuming Supergirl is successful, there are even plans for her to appear in a revamped Justice League movie at a later date.

But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves just yet. For now, we’ll sit tight and let you know once we get more news on who’ll be the DCEU’s Girl of Steel.
