Messing With The Timelines: Is The Flash Film Still Necessary?

One of the biggest talking points of the DCEU has been the inclusion of the Flash. Many fans were outraged that Grant Gustin wasn't given a chance to reprise his role on the big screen, while others bemoaned the costume choice for Ezra Miller's Injustice-inspired Scarlet Speedster. It's turned into a bit of a 'Twar,' with various fans coming to the defense of both actors and boldly declaring who's really the true Flash.

We Love Grant Gustin

Miller is a talented actor – and we have no doubt he’ll make an excellent Barry Allen in Justice League. That said, Gustin is already a fan favorite, having won our hearts with his powerful performances on the small screen. Whether he needs to be serious, silly, or even musical, Gustin shows he isn’t a one-trick pony.

This begs the question, why didn’t DC combine its TV and film universes like Marvel did? Imagine if Miller’s performance is incredible and overshadows Gustin’s, or vice versa. What will happen? DC’s playing with a loaded gun here, and chances are someone’s going to suffer.

Grodd

Reverse-Flash. Captain Cold. Captain Boomerang. Gorilla Grodd. Not exactly the names you’d mention in the same breath as Darkseid, General Zod, Lex Luthor or the Joker. In fact, they seem pretty B-grade in comparison, and this is problematic when it comes to establishing an antagonist for film.

These villains work on TV because they play a role in the buildup to the season’s climax, causing Barry some discomfort but never being the sole antagonists. On their own, they don’t pose formidable-enough threats to carry an entire film – apart from Reverse-Flash. He’s the exception here, but do we really want to see Barry battle him again after experiencing a whole season and a bit of it already?
