10 Things You May Have Missed In The Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Trailer

Ever since it became the surprise hit of 2014, fans of Marvel, sci-fi and just good movies in general have been eagerly waiting for the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy. Now, after showing off a bit of footage to the crowds at San Diego Comic Con this summer, we finally have our first look at Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in the form a 90 second teaser (the full-length trailer is coming shortly). The preview might not give us any plot details, but we do get a feel for the mood and tone of the film. Thankfully, it appears to be much the same as the first one - complete with lots of humour, fun character moments and "Hooked on a Feeling" playing on the soundtrack. If you look a little closer, though, more specific details about the movie do become apparent. Combine that with bits and pieces that have already been revealed, and there's a lot more to the trailer than first meets the eye. So, on that note, here are 10 things we spotted in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 teaser that you may have missed. If there's anything we overlooked, be sure to let us know in the comments section down below. 10) Back To Knowhere The trailer opens with a few establishing shots to remind us of the characters and their world. We see the empty corridors of Peter's spaceship the Milano, a glimpse of Drax on board, Gamora on an alien terrain and some jokey graffiti most likely written by Rocket. Our first proper hint at the content of the film, though, comes in a shot of Peter looking out over the cosmos. It's difficult to tell, but it looks to us like he's standing in the eye of Knowhere, the criminal outpost the Guardians visited in the first move to talk to the Collector about the Infinity Stone. In the comics, Knowhere - actually the skull of a giant cosmic being known as a Celestial - is the Guardians' base of operations (as it is in the movie's spinoff cartoon series). We could be wrong, but if we're right, it seems that Vol. 2 may follow the source material and make Knowhere the team's HQ. We probably shouldn't expect to see the likes of Cosmo the Space-Dog or Howard the Duck again, though. 9) The Sovereign And The Abilisk Things then cut to Gamora in a strange landscape, standing next to some sort of pulsing light - perhaps an artificial sun or some other kind of power source? Whatever it is, it's golden - which brings to mind James Gunn's description of a new antagonist and race that will feature in the movie. In Vol. 2, Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, The Man From U.N.C.L.E) is joining the cast as alien queen Ayesha. Here's how Gunn described the character: "Ayesha is the golden High Priestess of a genetically-perfect people called the Sovereign. She’s not a woman to be screwed with – she, and her entire world, are extraordinarily deadly." That's a fact backed up by the rest of this scene, which shows Gamora charging at an unseen big beastie, which is perhaps guarding the power source. Going by the single pink tentacle we see, this creature is presumably the Abilisk - a space monster confirmed to appear in the film and seen in some previously released concept art. We can assume that it will feature early on in the film - perhaps in the opening sequence? 8) Yondu Escapes Next up, we see an unexpected pairing - Rocket and Yondu. The leader of the Ravagers and a quasi-foster father for Peter, Yondu was almost a secondary antagonist of the first film, so it's strange to see a member of the Guardians teamed up with him here. Put together with what we know of the Comic-Con footage, though, and things become a lot clearer. At Comic-Con, a scene where Rocket, Groot and Yondu are held captive by the Ravagers was shown. This moment in the trailer must happen after they escape - presumably by playing with the gravity, hence the Ravagers floating about the place. Quite why the Ravagers have turned against their old boss is not yet known, but having Yondu escape with Rocket does suggest that he'll become a member of the Guardians in the sequel. Which would make sense, considering the character was a founding member of the team in the comics. Likewise, Yondu sports a much taller head-fin than in the previous movie - another thing that brings him closer in line with his comic book counterpart. 7) Nebula Captured Gamora's evil sister - and Thanos' other daughter - Nebula was a fun, if underutilized character, in the first movie. So, needless to say, we're happy to see her again in this trailer, even if it is just for a split second. As with everything, it's not totally clear what's going on here, but it seems that Nebula has just been captured - by Ravagers maybe? The way that this scene comes straight after a shot of Yondu possibly being on his way to joining the team suggests that Nebula will do the same as well. The last time we saw her, Nebula had failed her father and so, ran off to save her own cybernetic skin. Now that she's a lone wolf and captured by the Ravagers, it's not too much of a leap to imagine her being forced to team up with the Guardians. This will no doubt make for a sparky relationship between the two sisters and a nice bit of tension for the rest - how can they be sure that Nebula won't betray them? 6) It's Star-Lord, Man We then move on to some action shots with Chris Pratt - first Peter gets ready for battle by switching on his Star-Lord mask and then he's seen swerving through the sky in the Milano. It's all quite generic trailer stuff, but it does give us a look at Quill's redesigned outfit. While the now iconic mask remains unchanged, gone is Peter's red leather coat. In its place is a maroon body suit with some armour over the torso. This is a look that has also been seen in the film's concept art, which suggests he will wear it throughout the entire movie, rather than in just one scene. Like other things we've pointed out already, this seems to be part of a wider mission statement to reference the comics a little bit more than the first film, which mostly made its own path. While this look doesn't really match any of Star-Lord's many outfits from the source material, he does usually have some sort of full-body suit to go with his mask. 5) Ship Goes Down, Soldiers Go Up It's hard to work out what's going on in this next bit, but if you pick it apart there is some interesting info hidden within. First, it looks like Quill's frantic piloting in the previous shot was no use, as the ship crashes into the surface of a planet. We then immediately cut to an explosion of blue energy that throws a bunch of military-looking guys up in the air. Put these two images together and we can guess at what's happening. After Rocket and Yondu break out of the Ravager's jail, the Guardians give chase and eventually crash land - or perhaps are drawn to - a planet. Following them, the Ravagers likewise arrive on the world but are repelled by some strange force. If it is the Ravagers again, gravity is really not their friend in this movie. Also, in the top left corner of the scene (see above), it can be made out that the terrain below is a forest. This heavily suggests that this is the same planet seen in the next sequence... 4) Ego, Is That You? Here we have a sequence which sees the Guardians - well, we only see Quill, Gamora and Drax, but we can assume Rocket and Groot are there, too - leaving the wrecked Milano and venturing out into the strange woodland world on which they have crashed. It is a bit of a shot in the dark, but the weird events seen going on in the previous clip make us wonder if they've just landed on Ego the Living Planet. If you've been keeping up-to-date with the film's casting announcements, you'll know that Kurt Russell will be amongst the cast of Vol. 2. You will also know - spoilers, though it's already been officially revealed - that he is playing Quill's father, a sentient planet called Ego. We can speculate, then, that Ego lured his son's ship to his surface and repelled the Ravagers that were after him. Then again, maybe it's just a random planet and we're thinking into this far too much. 3) Peter And Gamora Whereas other teasers for upcoming sci-fi blockbusters would ramp up the doom and gloom, the meat of the trailer is a funny heartfelt chat. It takes place between Peter and Drax and reveals that Star-Lord's feelings for Gamora have been growing since the first film. With everything else that was going on, the building affection between these two unlikely soulmates - he's an interplanetary player and she's a ruthless assassin - wasn't exactly the focus of the movie. Putting this exchange in the first teaser of the sequel then suggests that this aspect will be placed front and centre next time around. This would fit with what Gunn has previously said about his hopes for this film. Whereas sequels often add in a bunch of new characters and move the focus away from the original cast, first and foremost he wants to continue the story of the Guardians and develop their characters and relationships. In his words, it's the story of them "being a family" after the first film saw them "becoming a family." 2) Drax Is (Sort Of) Learning The most memorable aspect of Drax in the first movie was his total lack of comprehension of the nuances of conversation. For instance, trying to compliment Gamora by calling her "a green whore" and misunderstanding metaphors. He's called Drax the Destroyer, after all. Not Drax the Small Talker. The trailer, however, suggests that he's been developing his social skills since we last saw him. In the trailer, he gives Peter some advice that is actually pretty deep for him. "There are two types of beings in the universe," he says, referring to the differences between Peter and Gamora. "Those who dance and those who do not." Don't worry, though, Drax hasn't totally changed, as he then proceeds to tell Quill that he needs to find "a woman who is pathetic... like you." Still, he means it in the nicest way and gives Star-Lord a big old hug afterwards. It should be a lot of fun to see Drax trying to amend his anti-social ways in the sequel, something that adds to Gunn's talk about building up the family relations between the Guardians. 1) Baby Groot's New Clothes Just when we think the trailer is over, it gives us one last shot of the two characters sidelined in the rest of the teaser - probably the franchise's flagship stars, Rocket and Groot. It's only brief, but we see Rocket being the ferocious rodent he is and shooting down a skulking enemy - through a wall no less - with a super-powerful three-barreled gun. Then, from behind his shoulder, pops out teeny Baby Groot. After sacrificing himself to save his friends at the end of the first movie, Groot was reborn from one twig, and it seems he's taking some time to grow back up again. It's also clear that the adorable Groot has now got a costume as well. The Comic-Con footage previously showed him donning the outfit when the Ravagers dressed him up for fun. Even cutthroat space pirates aren't immune to Baby's Groot's charms it seems. Less immediately noticeable is that Rocket has also had something of a wardrobe upgrade. As opposed to his orange suit from the first film, he's here seen in a very similar blue version. Once again, this further recalls the source material. Rocket wore a blue outfit in the Guardians of the Galaxy comics from Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, upon which the movies are primarily based.
