An American Werewolf in London both amused and horrified audiences alike upon its release in 1981, although US audiences took longer to warm to the film, despite the nationality of the main protagonist.

Director John Landis himself is American, but the film still has a predominantly British tone that may have alienated viewers from overseas. This is most evident in the credits, where Landis bizarrely inserted an end title congratulating Prince Charles and Princess Diana on their recent wedding.
