The return of Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine in the Deadpool 3 made fans wonder how the upcoming Marvel film would connect to the “Fox Marvel” timeline, especially with the events concerning Logan. Fortunately, Jackman reassured fans about the film’s canon, explaining how they’d fit in the MCU without making any changes.

In an interview with SiriusXM, Jackman spoke about his return to the Marvel franchise, and how Ryan Reynolds constantly asked him to play the role once more. He also reflected on his first viewing of Deadpool and how he had ideas that he put aside because he was sure that he was done playing the iconic X-Men character.

One of Jackman’s fears was messing with the established timeline that was set during the Marvel-Fox era, especially in Logan. While he did make it clear previously with Reynolds during their Deadpool 3 announcement video, the interview gave a bit more clarity on how that’s going to work. Jackman explained how Deadpool 3 wouldn’t “screw” with the Logan timeline — time travel or flashbacks.

Jackman believes that Marvel Studios still has some flexibility to include Wolverine in the MCU without messing with what has already been established in Logan. He hinted about the possibility of time travel thanks to “science,” like what happened in Avengers: Endgame. Not to mention, the post-credits scene in Deadpool 2, where Deadpool got the time-traveling device working again.

He also pointed out how Marvel can tell its characters’ stories through different years and events, such as Black Widow and Captain Marvel, which both took place years before the events of Endgame and Infinity War. All he cares about is to make sure that the events in Logan aren’t changed because that’s what is important to him and possibly his fans.

“All because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines, now, we can go back because it’s ‘science. And so I don’t have to screw with the Logan timeline, which was important to me, and I think probably to the fans, too.”

Currently, in the Marvel MCU, its latest film, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, takes place at least after 2023. Meanwhile, the events of Logan took place in 2029. There is still room to tell Wolverine’s story while also knowing that he’s going to die in the future. And while the X-Men hasn’t been introduced, the idea of mutants has already been established thanks to the Ms. Marvel finale.

Deadpool 3 is scheduled to come out in theaters in 2024.
