Why The Justice League Trailer Is Good News For The DCEU

After all the excitement and build-up of the teasers, the Justice League trailer is finally here - and it's simply awesome. If the final edit of the film ends up anywhere near as good as this preview is, we're in for a treat. From Aquaman spearing parademons to Wonder Woman’s unmatched badassery, there's a real thrill seeing these legendary superheroes all united in one big screen adventure. While the trolls will let you know everything that’s wrong with the trailer, there's certainly a lot more right with it. So much so that it bodes extremely well for the DCEU. Could this finally be the movie that truly turns things around for Warner Bros. and gets the fans back on their side? We certainly think so. Read on to find out everything that the trailer did right. Not Showing Too Much Regardless of where you stand in terms of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, you have to admit that the trailers showed far too much. The plots, secrets, villains, and all the best action scenes were spoiled in advance - something that I believe heavily influenced the general attitude towards the film after its release. If anything, the Justice League trailer showed just enough. Obviously there will be another full preview (or more) before the movie arrives in November, but this one did its job superbly. Trailers are meant to whet our appetites, not be highlights packages. This one made us hungry for the movie right now, without actually knowing the full story. Lack Of Superman Yes, you read that right. The lack of Superman is good for business. With all the rumors swirling around that he'll wear the famed black suit (and maybe sport the iconic mullet), do you really want to see all of this beforehand? Of course you don't. I still believe that Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice's biggest mistake was showing that Big Blue would rise again. Imagine the sheer impact if we'd never known he'd appear in Justice League and then he pops up? It would've been insane. While that moment can't happen now, his reveal should still be kept out of the spotlight until the film's eventual release. Think of wrestling as an example. When a wrestler is out of action and off TV for months, he/she receives a much bigger pop when they finally appear through the curtain. The same principle applies here. The Man of the Steel will get the reception he deserves. We just need to be patient. Levity Barry Allen: What are your superpowers again? Bruce Wayne: I’m rich. That one interaction alone shows us the new direction of the DCEU. No longer are they the somber and humorless affairs that we knew, as this trailer showcases true moments of lightheartedness and fun. While I certainly hope it isn't a full-blown comedy or includes too many one-liners, taking pages out of Batman: The Animated Series and the Justice League Unlimited's approaches will certainly add heart to the film. Music Remember the schizophrenic soundtrack for Suicide Squad? From rap, to pop, to metal, the music was all over the place. While you might argue this matches the characters' wacky personalities, music is crucial for conveying tone, hence all the head scratching about what the film was trying to be. In the lead up to this trailer, we've heard the White Stripes' "Icky Thump" as the song of choice in promotional material. However, this time around, the tunes selected are a hard-rock cover of the Beatles' classic "Come Together" and the White Stripes' "The Hardest Button to Button." Dirty rock 'n' roll seems to be the golden thread here, setting up the promise of a headbanging, cinematic rock opera, which I'm more than okay with. They've Listened To You Make no mistake, this trailer shows that Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. have listened to all of the criticism directed at them. Everything about it seems different from what’s been released before, with a sense that this is a far more planned and meticulous effort. So far, Warner Bros. hasn't caved in to the pressure of servicing the fans, and released the promo material on their terms. The marketing campaign for this film looks to be heavily strategic and calculated, which is exactly what was needed after the last two efforts. In the forthcoming months, I hope the studio continues to believe in this less-is-more approach and only allow us momentary sneak peeks. While it's frustrating for the fans who obviously want to see more, the delayed gratification should be worth it at the end of the day. One thing's for sure: the hype for this film is now real.
