Kathleen Kennedy Addresses What Happens To The Star Wars Franchise After Episode IX

As of right now, the future is looking bright for the Star Wars franchise. After all, over the next few years, we have Rogue One, Episode VIII, Han Solo, and Episode IX to look forward to, but what happens after that? There have been a lot of rumours, but will the current trilogy be followed by another? If so, what form will that take?

In a new interview with EW, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy addressed exactly that, but even she doesn’t seem entirely sure of what comes next as of right now.

“That’s a conversation going on, too. I have to honestly tell you, could we [do nothing but stand-alones]? Sure. But I don’t know. We are looking at all of that.”

The studio has plenty of time to figure things out to be fair, and you have to believe that they have at least a rough list of spinoffs and an outline of what comes after Episode IX. However, in regards to future Anthology movies, it appears as if things will ultimately depend on how well Rogue One: A Star Wars Story performs when it opens next month (though things are certainly looking promising on that front).

“There are [possible movies] that we have been talking a lot about. But we are planning to sit down in January, since we will have had The Force Awakens released, now Rogue One, and we’ve finished shooting Episode VIII. We have enough information where we can step back a little bit and say, What are we doing? What do we feel is exciting? And what are some of the things we want to explore?”

A Boba Fett movie seems highly likely, while there’s a lot of demand for an Obi-Wan Kenobi led spinoff as well. Unfortunately, neither have been confirmed just yet and if Lucasfilm really doesn’t have a firm list locked down as of right now, it could be some time before we find out for sure one way or another.

Either way, the Star Wars franchise is definitely in safe hands with Kennedy, so we’ll no doubt be pleasantly surprised when the franchise’s future is eventually made clear.
