6 Movies That Celebrate Singledom

Featuring a remarkable central performance from actress Keri Russell, Waitress is the final film to be directed by the late Adrienne Shelley, who also appears in a supporting role. It is the story of Jenna – a woman constrained by her unhappy marriage to an oppressive bully (Jeremy Sisto) – and who works as a waitress in a diner. As a talented inventor of pies, she hatches a plan to win a pie contest in a nearby town and use the prize money to start a new life. However, understanding her desire to leave him, her controlling husband tries to prevent her from entering the competition.

An unwanted pregnancy sets Jenna on an alternative path, however, as she becomes entangled in a passionate affair with her new, married doctor (Nathan Fillion). Jenna slowly bonds the gestating baby, and she grows in confidence until her abusive husband’s disappointed reaction to the birth of a healthy daughter prompts her to take action. Leaving her husband, and her doctor, Jenna embraces her role as a single mother, wins the pie contest and inherits the diner she worked in. The film sees her achieve her dreams and find personal satisfaction in a life with her daughter.
