Nato And Remy’s Last Stand: 2013’s Independent Horror Hits

While keeping up with all the mainstream horror releases of any year might be hard enough, it's even harder to view all the lesser-known independent features that are released each and every week. While Video On Demend services give smaller films the audience they deserve, it's sure making life hectic for film fans and reviewers. It's nearly impossible to keep up with the always growing backlog of horror films, and even I can admit a few films were missed I would have loved to see - but both Remy and I did our damnedest to catch every film in our power. Dedication, thy name is insanity.

I know Matt has talked about this movie a few times, but I have yet to really go into it. The thing is, as 2013 came to a close, I found myself thinking of Would You Rather more and more. This was a film I enjoyed, but the more I sit and think about it, the more I realize it was one of the better horror films of the year. From the name to the people involved, I honestly went into this movie expecting a shitty Saw ripoff. What I got, instead, was a taut thriller about just how far some people would be willing to go to get themselves out of debt. That may seem stupid and shallow, but as you watch the film you find yourself wondering what you would do in the exact same situation.

What situation, you ask?

A bunch of people gathered together to play a rather vicious game of Would You Rather, with a nice little purse going to the winner. Everyone attending is there because they desperately need the money for something that would change or save the lives of themselves or those around them. The “Would You Rathers” they all have to deal with often come down to whether they would take pain, or give pain to someone. As soon as you see the old lady tied up, you realize things are probably going to get a tad sick and twisted – which they do.

Also, boner points for casting former porn star Sasha Grey. Also, huge props to Brittany Snow, who is slowly becoming one of my favorite horror actresses over the last few years. She picks some dark parts, and this movie was no exception.

Oh, and that ending. Damn.
