Remy – A Horrible Way To Die
I am trying to pick some films you may not have seen for my choices, and A Horrible Way To Die was an incredibly interesting take on the slasher film. When it begins, we see that Sarah is trying to get on with her life after having been in love with someone she had no idea was a serial killer. We also see that, conveniently, the serial killer has escaped, and seems to be hunting Sarah down. This is the part of the article where I become vague and cryptic, because I don’t want to ruin what makes this film so great.
Well, I may have to, actually, but again, I will keep it vague.
Basically, when we get slasher movies, we get inhuman killers, who are unstoppable tanks. We cannot relate to them, nor can we understand them. What makes A Horrible Way To Die so memorable is it shows us a different side to the serial killer, showing us killing as a sort of disease. It is the polar opposite of a Friday the 13th kind of movie, and more people need to give it a shot for that exact reason.
If anything, it’s well worth seeing just for the awesome final fifteen minutes.
Nato – Bride Of Chucky
Fun fact: I hadn’t seen this movie until this year, because I was deathly afraid of Chucky. Can’t say why, but something about this talking, killing, evil doll just destroyed me as a child, and I never bothered to check out his films since. Well, I went from zero to sixty on this one, because I marathoned the entire series in about a week, and now I’m one of the biggest Child’s Play fans around. But while Child’s Play obviously started everything and holds a special place in horror history, Bride Of Chucky actually might be my favorite Chucky film. Why? No other Chucky film balances dark, demented comedy with hilarious horror kills and proper genre craftsmanship. Don Mancini nailed it – no ifs, ands, or butts.
Child’s Play 3 showed signs of staleness, as Chucky’s constant quest to ruin Andy Barclay’s life was getting dull. Bride Of Chucky introduced new characters, new villains, and a completely new dynamic that Chucky fans weren’t used to. While Chucky had always showed sings of being a bit of a wiseguy, it was never truly embraced until Bride Of Chucky. This is where the kills were blown to a silly proportion, Chucky got a wife (voiced by Jennifer Tilly) who was actually sassier than he was, and the two were a horror couple made in hell. This also opened up limitless possibilities on both the comedic and horrific front, giving us an epic genre lovemaking scene with one of the greatest franchise lines, and seriously nasty kills.
Chucky needed to do something different, and introducing Tiffany proved to be exactly what he needed.
