Remy – Mutants
I really, really like this French, sci-fi take on zombies quite a bit. The best way I can describe this 2009 movie is 28 Days Later meets The Descent. The creatures may not LOOK like zombies, but in every way, they act like them, and in many ways, Mutants is one of the freshest takes on the zombie genre in some time.
Mutants is about a disease the turns people into flesh eating “mutants” (usual zombie fodder), but what sets this film apart is, though we first focus on a couple, a pregnant woman and man, the man turns early on, and Mutants deals with a pregnant woman not only trying to survive, but trying to specifically survive the father of her baby, who seems to have taken a special interest in her.
If you think regular zombie films are tense, wait until you find yourself watching a pregnant woman trying to escape them. Damn near gave me a 90 minute panic attack.
But really – great film, well put together, and the zombie mutants are creepy as f@ck. A very fun and original take on the genre, for sure, and it’s on Netflix right now, so take a Xanax and go watch it.
Trust me, the Xanax will help.
Nato – Resident Evil
I will defend Resident Evil as an entire film franchise, don’t tempt me, but for the purpose of this article, I’ll try to be a little realistic and just voice my love for the very first movie that started it all (well, after the video game started it, that is). Starring Milla Jovovich as the deadly sexy Alice, Resident Evil is one of the best video game adaptations to date, and provides a thrilling zombie experience while hitting on major points from the video game franchise that have become famous to gamers alike.
Paul W.S. Anderson always gets a bad rap for creating “popcorn” movies, but considering the Resident Evil movies, that’s exactly what they need. While I admit that they’ve started to lose some bite, the very first Resident Evil is easily the most intelligent, and the whole booby-trapped house aspect provides lasting tension – until zombies are introduced. Once that happens, shit hits the fan, and survival seems all too far away. You’re getting fast-paced action and some cool techy quirks, who cares if the story is lacking, because intensity is through the roof.
I love playing the Resident Evil video games, but watching the movies is equally as fun for me – none being better than the original.
