Nato And Remy’s Last Stand: Chucky’s Die-Light Reel

Thinking up ideas for these articles is hard sometimes, and that's why Remy and myself have a list of go-to topics on the back-burner for when our brains are fried beyond belief. This week happened to be one of those weeks where between work, screenings and writing, there wasn't an ounce of brainpower left. With the well dry, we thought it'd be a perfect time to revisit a segment that we're growing very fond of, our "Die-light Reel" compilations, and while doing so we thought we'd honor one of horror's most iconic slashers - Chucky. A personal favorite of mine (although Remy may not feel as strongly), Chucky's methods of psychotic murder range from swiftly and stealthily brutal to absolutely batshit insane - like exploding water bed mixed with blood insane. He's one of the only slashers whose atmosphere ranges from the darkest scares to jovial humor, introducing wives and kids into the mix, but this murderous doll always gets the job done. While the jury is still out on which Child's Play film is actually the best (purists go Child's Play, contemporary fans back Bride of Chucky), one thing is for sure - his deaths rock. Why are we talking about death? Because we're horror fans, and yes, we pay close attention to the death scenes these films create. Half of horror is having fun and knowing how to separate reality from Hollywood, and slasher films are the perfect example. Will murderous dolls ever roam the Earth, haunting children and killing adults? No. Is watching Tiffany kill Redman hilarious? Of course. So, without further blabbering, here are our picks for Chucky's definitive Die-Light reel! Remy - Child's Play 3: Garbage Truck Goodbye First thing's first, right away this scene is awesome because Chucky yells "SHIIIIT." I know that sounds juvenile, but I always loved those moments from this series when they just remind you that this is some psycho dude inside of a doll. No one wants to get dropped into a trash truck. Especially one of those trucks that also compacts the trash. The next thing that makes this scene rule is the fact that he plays off the driver's humanity and calls out like he is just some human or kid trapped. The garbage guy goes back there to help and, well, you know how it plays out. I just think the very idea of being crushed alive in a trash compactor is pretty awful. Even worse if you stop to think that this dude was just trying to help someone, and his humanity and sympathy caused his death. This is why I don't help people. With anything. Ever. Nato - Child's Play: John Simonsen's Voodoo Backfire We all know Charles Lee Ray is able to transfer his soul into Chucky because of a voodoo curse, and it's John Simonsen who teaches Charles that very curse. Taking him under his wing as a pupil earlier in life, John imparts all his wisdom unto Charles, only to see his teachings twisted by a maniacal madman concerned with cheating death - a professional hazard. Simonsen knows Charles Lee Ray isn't a good man, and blames himself for thinking otherwise, but what happens next could never have been predicted, as Charles confronts John in doll form after being shot and feeling physical harm. John, confused, sees Chucky in all his glory, and this is also the first free-moving shot we see of the doll as well. It's in this moment that Chucky goes from an angry doll to a living, breathing entity capable of chaos and destruction, starting with poor John Simonsen. Finding a John voodoo doll, Chucky breaks the poor man's bones and tortures him for information, demanding to know how a plastic doll can bleed. This is where Chucky learns about the soul transference, his bodily manifestation in the doll, and his connection to Andy Barclay. Sadly for John, the information doesn't save his life, and a stab to his voodoo doll's heart leaves him laying on the floor waiting for death. Remy - Bride of Chucky: Sexy Mirror of Death So have you ever had the opportunity to screw under one of those bed mirrors? I will tell you, it's a little weird. I only say that because that one moment you actually look in your own eyes mid-coitus is all types of creepy. I don't want to mistakenly look at me while I am banging. Side note, sorry. Anyway, in this scene from Bride of Chucky, we see a young couple going at it under one of said bed mirrors. We also see that Tiffany is going to have no part of this, and she picks up a bottle of champagne. The woman yelps when she sees the doll, and the guy just thinks this is because he is giving it to her good (sorry, I will never use that expression again). He looks up just in time to see the creepy ass female doll throw the bottle into the mirror, bringing a sweet, steady rain of mirrored glass on these two hormonal half wits. People always say they want to die during sex, but horror movies taught me otherwise. Still, it's a cool and original death scene that stands as a testimony to why these movies are so much "fucking" fun. See what I did there? Nato - Child's Play 2: One Bad Day For Toy Factory Worker #3 Poor Toy Factory Worker #3. He's the character everyone knows in death, but no one knew in life. Did he have children? A wife? Child support? A creative career being sustained by some assembly line bullshit job that paid the bills? Who did this man leave behind! Unfortunately we'll never know, because this factory worker's only purpose is to slow down a chase sequence between Andy and Chucky. Here's to you, simple story cog, for what we never knew in life - well, we still don't know in death. But in any case, your death was pretty friggin awesome, so at least it can be memorialized on this list. A nice consolation prize? When Andy leads Chucky through the Good Guys toy factory, a maze of conveyor belts and machinery, it's Toy Factor Worker #3 who sees one of the machines jammed up and not working. Going over to fix the apparent problem, it turns out the malfunction is nothing but a trap, and unfortunately for this poor worker, his eyesight takes a nasty hit. Locking his head in position, the machine jams two doll eyes directly into his skull, killing him instantly. Creating a road block, Chucky gets back to his soul swapping ways, and the memory of this worker is gone forever. God bless, Toy Factory Worker #3. I hope heaven treated you better than this confusing, crazy, murderous doll filled world we live in. Remy - Seed of Chucky: Water and Acid Don't Mix I am now going to tell why you the subtitle for this entry is genius. The guy who bites it in this Seed of Chucky scene is none other than the rather colorful John Waters. Best known for his kooky direction and eccentric personal style, it was great fun to see this outspoken fan work his way into a Child's Play film - made even better by the fact that his kill involves a splash of acid to the face. Get it, Water(s) and acid don't mix. Man, sometimes I wish I could date me. The scene is made even better by the fact that it plays off the idea that Chucky's "seed" did not want to kill him, but the dude reacted in terror and fell backwards, knocking the acid over on himself. Chucky laughs and tells his son he's "a fucking natural," and then they take a selfie with the corpse for his Mom. There is just so much fun campiness in that two and a half minute scene, you can't help but admire how the Child's Play series knows how to keep itself fresh, and keep its deaths interesting. Oh man, Water and acid don't mix. Chucky would appreciate that line. Nato - Bride of Chucky: John Ritter Turns Into Pinhead There are a few reasons as to why I love this kill. First off, Bride Of Chucky might be one of the funniest, most self-aware slasher films from the 90s. Good old fashioned horror fun - you can't go wrong with an evil female doll who idolizes Martha Stewart. Secondly? It's John Ritter, famed nice guy, who gets absolutely demolished by Chucky - an inventive Chucky I might add. This kill really drove home the fact that as time progresses, Chucky evolves, mixing some nasty dark humor with terrifying horror. Lastly? Um, a Hellraiser reference. Honestly guys and gals, what can be better? I love the setup of his kill, as Tiffany taunts Chucky by saying, "For God's sake Chucky, drag yourself into the 90s. Stabbings went out with Bundy and Dahmer, you look like Martha Steward with that thing." Of course, Chucky retorts with a, "Who the fuck is Martha Stewart?" - and we're off to the races. Proving to Tiff he's not a murderous relic, Chucky rigs Jesse's van like a Saw trap, setting nails on the airbag for an explosion of sharp shrapnel. John Ritter's character Chief Kincaid wants to stop Jesse and Jade from running away together, but since they're also Chucky's ride, Kincaid's efforts only spell death. Breaking into the van, he plants some drugs for cops to find and notices the trap - but it's too late. Looking at Kincaid's nail-filled face, Chucky makes a snide remark about seeing that image somewhere before - an obvious nod to Hellraiser's Pinhead. Horror referencing horror - the greatest meta work of all. Remy - Curse of Chucky: Chucky Reveal via Face Peel and Eye Stab Though I had originally gone with the axe to the jaw scene (because jaw removals always freak me out in horror), I actually want to give a nod to the scene when Barb starts peeling away Chucky's face and realizes that he is the source behind all this madness. It was actually a pretty cool reveal, showing Chucky walking at her with the knife (in a scene that felt like a nod to the first movie, only with way better effects this time). Why am I including it? Because of what he says to her before the kill. "You have your mother's eyes, and they were always TOO FUCKING CLOSE TOGETHER!" - jamming the kitchen knife into her eye. I have no idea why, but that line slayed me and gave me a new appreciation for this insane series. It may not be the best kill on the list, but with Chucky, it's not always just about the kills. It's about the insane shit he spouts before and after. This cheeky eye joke sums up exactly why Chucky's legacy still hasn't died. Chucky knows what he's doing and has fun doing it. Nato - Child's Play 2 - Phil Takes A Tumble My last pick isn't exactly the most exciting of kills in the franchise, but for simple brutality, Phil's death still remains ingrained in my mind. Perfectly encapsulating everything that makes one of Chucky's kills memorable, we get Andy being framed, Phil acknowledging Chucky's presence, a cheeky Chucky one-liner, and a framable death that only points to Andy. Chucky's manipulation is in full force with this death, still living in a horror universe where scares ruled over comedy, aiding a Child's Play franchise entry that might arguably be better than the original. Walking down the basement stairs, Phil sees Andy - after fighting Chucky - holding an electric knife looking scared. Walking down the stairs, trying to calm the shaken child, Chucky waits in the shadows with his usual devious look. As Phil walks down the stairs, Chucky trips Phil, and while he's hanging off the staircase, he sees Chucky standing, living and breathing. Chuckster makes eye contact, and seeing Phil's terrified face, he mutters "Hows it hangin' Phil?" - and drops him, breaking his neck in front of Andy. Quick and painless, a fate not all of Chucky's victims are privileged to have, but this haunting cinematic death stands as one of the best throughout the Child's Play franchise.
