Remy – Beetlejuice (1988)

Okay, this one is a weird sort of go-between, because it kind of IS a horror film, and it kind of isn’t. Beetlejuice is from a time when Tim Burton’s brain was one of the best things that happened to Hollywood in a long while. His films were pumped up with craven imagery and gothic humor, and you need a real appreciation of that stuff to understand just how wonderful films like Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands are. Beetlejuice has all the elements of a horror film – creepy undead guy, haunted house, afterlife, possession – but all that stuff is made palatable for wide audiences because it’s broken up with genuinely funny situations and scenarios.
I think Beetlejuice is great for families, horror and fantasy in general, because it shows parents they can let their kids “go there” without fearing “there” will be too dark of a place.
Also, anytime you can throw a choreographed dance number into a horror movie, it tends to loosen up the tension a bit.
