Nato And Remy’s Last Stand: Our Favorite Rockstar Horror Cameos

It's always interesting to see which celebrity cultures are obsessed with the horror genre, but the most obvious socialites who partake in horror goodness are musicians. Now the type of musician always differs, because I've seen numerous episodes of Cribs where some hip-hop mogul has a Chucky doll or Leatherface statuette in his house, but the most obvious group of musicians to praise horror are the more hard-rocking metalheads. Hell, looking at the current genre, the band Chiodos has a song titled "Those Who Slay Together, Stay Together" which is about killing the undead with your friends essentially. In discussing this with my weekly partner Remy, we thought it'd be fun to discuss some of our favorite rockstar appearances in horror. Again, the most represented musical genre you'll see is based around heavy distorted guitars and brutalizing bass pedal usage, but I just bet a few picks will surprise you. People like Henry Rollins and Dee Snider are no surprise of course, but what about a British alt-rocker and a famous rapper? Not out of the ordinary, but it's cool to see all walks of life enjoying horror! With that said, read on to see nine awesome performances/cameos by rockstars/musicians in horror films! Remy: Dee Snider - Strangeland Alright, I will admit, I am not using the term cameo correct here because Snider is a major component of the film, but in the same breath, he is Dee f*cking Snider playing a serial killing madman, and if we did this entire list and made no mention of this, we would just be asses. Plus, Matt has hung out with members of Twisted Sister, so this is sorta my nod to him and his endless badassery. (Nato's note: This is a true fact) The real kicker here is that Strangeland is not a terrible movie, and that's solely because of how much deviant fun Dee got to have playing Captain Howdy. Remy: Busta Rhymes - Halloween: Resurrection So sorry to bring this terrible film up in our column of non-terrible films, but I have to give a nod to the producers of Halloween Resurrection for trying to stay as relevant as possible, and only coming across as sad in the process. It's like: Hey, kids like reality TV, right? And kids like Busta Rhymes, right? And kids like the Halloween movies, right? SO WHAT IF WE PUT ALL THREE OF THOSE TOGETHER?! The end result is a film that is more like a 90 minute pile of horse shit, steaming in front of your face. Also, Busta beats up Michael Myers. Yeah, f#ck that. Seriously. Remy: Alice Cooper - Prince Of Darkness I LOVED the underrated John Carpenter classic, Prince of Darkness. An ambiguous movie about the end of the world and the resurrection of Satan on Earth. While we do not see much in the way of action, we do see the enigmatic Alice Cooper playing a creepy ass homeless man who also seems to be a conduit for the evil. I won't lie, it is kind of a confusing movie, but that doesn't make it bad. Even so, it's worth seeing just to witness Alice Cooper being all homeless and creepy, which is the most metal thing you really can do. Honorable Nod: Kelly Rowland from Freddy Vs. Jason Who would have thought a member of Destiny's Child would actually work in a movie where Freddy fights Jason? Thing is, she did. More than anyone else in the cast, Kelly Rowland seemed like she knew it was campy and she was supposed to be having fun, and in that sense, she was cast perfectly. I also found it hilarious she made fun of Freddy's penis, and her getting her nose off was kinda awesome, nightmare or not. Nato: Moby - Suck Moby, yes the bloke best know for his electric dance music beats, vegan lifestyle, and massive support for animal rights, appeared in the horror comedy Suck, a musically driven cult flick about a band who turn themselves into vampires for fame. What did he appear as? None other than a metal singer named Beef Bellows, leader of the Secretaries of Steak. Let's face it, the man really knows how to step outside his comfort zone. As Beef Bellows, Moby is a dickish redneck from Buffalo, New York who loves to cover his crews in delicious raw meat, tries to hook up with the sexy vampire bassist from our protagonist band (played by Jessica Pare), but ends up becoming her midnight snack. Going against everything Moby is known for, he outshines other celebrity cameos in the film like Alice Cooper, Henry Rollins, Iggy Pop, and Alex Lifeson - no easy task. Nato: Meat loaf - The Rocky Horror Picture Show Don't even try and argue that The Rocky Horror Picture Show doesn't have flavors of horror throughout. There's killing, ghoulish looking characters, and Tim Curry dressed as a transsexual mad scientist named Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Please, if the last point isn't reason enough to classify this as a horror film, then I'm not sure what standards you're going by. With that said, Rocky Horror is a musical, so of course some musical talent had to show up, but grabbing the "Bat Out Of Hell" himself, Meat Loaf, was a move of epic rock glory. He shows up as Eddie, the ex-delivery boy, and also ex-lover to Columbia (Nell Campbell) along partial brain donor to Rocky. He rides out on a motorcycle and does a usual Meat Loaf musical number, but then Dr. Frank-N-Furter has enough. Cornering him with an ice pick, he kills off Eddie, and Meat Loaf is never seen again - in the film at least. Meat Loaf would have done anything for love, but this time it got his ass sliced open. Nato: Ivan Moody - The Devil's Carnival There's so much great talent to be found in The Devil's Carnival because it's another horror musical, but Ivan Moody's portrayal of the Hobo Clown really stuck with me because of his phenomenal performance and equally hypnotizing solo ballad. Ivan Moody, for those who don't know, is the singer of modern day metal heavy-hitters Five Finger Death Punch, and if you listen to their music, you'll know Moody does a lot of aggressive singing - but also inserts very strong moments of true singing as well. The Devil's Carnival really gave Moody a chance to flex his singing talents in a way his metal music doesn't, showing fans of his what a truly astounding voice he has when he's not shouting gravely threats over brutal guitar riffage. As a fan of Five Finger Death Punch, Moody's Hobo Clown was a real treat. Nato: Henry Rollins - Feast Sure, Henry Rollins was in Wrong Turn 2 and Suck as well, but since Feast is a personal favorite of mine, I'm going to pick his self-help coach character from John Gulager's only hit film as my favorite Henry Rollins role as well. The badass former lead singer of Black Flag shows up in Feast as a shady nice guy who wants to help people better themselves, but turns out to be a scumbag when he drops his wedding ring while hitting on Jenny Wade's character Honey Pie. He tries numerous times to concoct a plan, but fails miserably. Oh yeah, he loses his pants and has to wear pink sweats a majority of the film as well. From on-stage activist to emasculated moron, oh Henry Rollins. His death is even better though, as he tries to escape the bar and pull around one of the cars. Everyone inside hears some shuffling outside, and after peering out the barricaded door, we see the monsters using Rollins as a human battering ram, slamming his head repeatedly against the door. Nato: Chris Martin - Shaun Of The Dead Yes, the singer from Coldplay is in Shaun of the Dead. Where might you ask? Well it isn't obvious, and he doesn't stand out, but there are two instances where you can see Martin appear in Edgar Wright's zombie masterpiece. The first occurance comes when Shaun and Liz emerge from The Winchester, there's a zombie moving from right to left in front of a phone both. There's your Chris Martin sighting number one! Yup, the rocker goes undead right before being gunned down by British special forces as they save the day. His second appearance comes in the form of a Zomb-Aid promoter during that final television montage of all the reactions to the zombie outbreak. I personally didn't know the first few times I watched the film, then my eyes were finally opened by a friend who pointed this out. Kudos Chris Martin, I might not be a Coldplay fan, but you're OK in my book if you can sneak in a movie like Shaun of The Dead! Have we missed your favorite musician popping up in a horror film?
