New Shazam! TV Spot Promises A Very Different DCEU Film

A new trailer for David F. Sandberg's Shazam! has conjured its way online today, teasing a very different DCEU film that what we've come to expect from the franchise.

With Wonder Woman 1984 pushed back by a whole seven months, it looks like 2019 will now be the year of Shazam!, at least as far as DCEU films go. And from everything we’ve laid eyes on so far, it truly seems like the upcoming flick will be unlike any DC movie we’ve seen before.

For one, it’s headlined by Billy Batson, a young boy who finds himself as the unlikely successor to Shazam, an ancient wizard who’s harnessed the god-like abilities of Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury. That brings a little levity and lightheartedness to David F. Sandberg’s superhero spinoff, which was sorely missing from Warner’s other comic book movies, like Justice League and Batman V Superman.

And that levity and lightheartedness is on full display in this newest trailer, which is rather short but still packs in a good amount of laughs and humor alongside some tantalizing action shots of the DCEU’s next big hero. Or at least, what Warner Bros. will be hoping is the franchise’s next big hero. Because with the future of both the Caped Crusader and the Man of Steel very much up in the air right now, this burgeoning cinematic universe could do with a few fresh faces.

As it stands, the DCEU’s next film doesn’t have a ton of hype around it, at least not compared to its MCU competition, but a recent test screening did receive a strong reception, with one person even claiming the film to be DC’s best offering since Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy. Obviously, that’s just one opinion, but given the ongoing success of Aquaman, it’s starting to look like the franchise is in a much better place now than it was this time last year, and WB will no doubt want to keep the momentum going.

While a sequel for Arthur Curry is pretty much a given at this point, it remains to be seen whether the world will be left clamoring for more of Billy Batson, but we’ll find out soon enough, as Shazam! hits theaters on April 5th, 2019.
