Next weekend, we’ll be finding out whether or not anyone cares about the G.I. Joe franchise when prequel Snake Eyes roundhouse kicks its way into theaters, with Paramount hoping that third time marks the charm for the toyetic adaptations that have so far failed to catch fire at the box office in the way the studio would have hoped.
Stephen Sommers’ The Rise of Cobra barely turned a profit after just about squeaking past $300 million at the box office, while John M. Chu’s Retaliation was cheaper to produce and made more money, but it’s been eight years and the third installment in the main timeline has still yet to materialize.
Instead, we’re getting Henry Golding in his first stab at playing an action hero, with all of the footage we’ve seen so far making it look as though Snake Eyes may yet turn out to be one of this summer’s most pleasant surprises. The leading man has hardly been shy in voicing his desires to headline a multi-film series, so it won’t be a shock to find out that the movie has a credits stinger designed to set up further adventures.
According to our sources – the same ones who told us Luke Skywalker was returning to Star Wars long before Mark Hamill broke the internet in The Mandalorian‘s Season 2 finale – once the narrative has drawn to a close, we’ll see Andrew Koji’s Storm Shadow living the high life on a private jet.
His companion just so happens to be Money Heist star Úrsula Corberó’s Baroness, who offers him the opportunity to join a mysterious organization known as Cobra. It’s not the most original thing we’ve ever heard, but it does at least hint that there’s already a plan in place for Snake Eyes sequels.
