A long time ago (38 years, to be exact), in a galaxy far, far away (your local multiplex), something very special happened. The Separatist Alliance – headed by Count Dooku –  remains a threat to the Galactic Republic, and Supreme Chancellor Palpatine is kidnapped. Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker mount a rescue mission and secure his release, with Skywalker killing Dooku. Anakin learns that he and Senator Amidala are to be parents, but his excitement is tempered by sudden visions of his wife’s painful death during childbirth.

Palpatine begins manipulating Skywalker with promises about the power of the Dark Side, and attempts to use him to infiltrate the Jedi Council – simultaneously revealing himself to be the dastardly Darth Sidious, while Anakin kills Mace Windu and earns the title Darth Vader.

Bringing events to a head, Palpatine launches a large-scale surprise attack on all Jedi, using clones and Vader, and in doing so declares the Republic to be the Galactic Empire, with himself as Emperor. Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda survive the massacre, however, and a final showdown between Obi-Wan and Vader ensues, after Vader attacks Senator Amidala.

Obi-Wan Kenobi believes he has killed Vader, having left him gravely injured and burning in a volcanic landscape – but Emperor Palpatine retrieves him and resurrects him using robotics. Senator Amidala gives birth to twins – Luke and Leia – before dying, and the surviving Jedi decide to split the children up for their own safety. Leia is adopted by Senator Bail Organa of Alderaan, while Luke is taken in by his step-uncle, Owen, on Tatooine – with Obi-Wan Kenobi watching over him from a distance.
