Top 10 Best Dressed Marvel Characters

It’s no secret that superheroes have a pretty distinct fashion sense when it comes to picking a costume for their alter ego. While the vast majority only make any sense in the pages of a comic (and sometimes only barely), it’s rare to see something beyond the usual spandex/massive head-gear combos we usually see. Let’s take a moment to look at ten Marvel superheroes that have a solid sense of fashion and know how to dress to impress. 10. Captain America – The First Avenger Ok, the whole super patriot thing can wear a bit thin with some people, but he’s generally a nice guy and his outfit does the job of pushing the whole America thing. The outfit in the movie though isn’t the usual silly spandex affair. This is an outfit of leathers and strap, pockets and ammo pouches. It’s something that you don’t often see on some of the older heroes, it’s an outfit that’s actually practical. For that reason alone, Captain America deserves a spot on this list. 9. Deadpool Deadpool is probably one of the more cooler characters of the Marvel Universe. He started life as a rip-off of DC’s Deathstroke, even having virtually the same ‘real’ name as the other character. However, the ‘Merc with the Mouth’ is an example of what can happen with good writing. His costume takes the usual colour coded spandex affair and augments it with a varied arsenal of weaponry and ammunition that at the very least, will always include his twin katanas. Obviously, the full head mask serves more than one purpose here. Not only is it an effective, if slightly over the top way of concealing his identity, it also hides the horrors of his face. Wade Wilson suffers from cancer and his super powers stem from an experimental cure that had mixed success. He won’t die of cancer, but he’s not rid of it either, the rate that his body is constantly trying to heal himself from the treatment has left his skin looking like a mass of tumours. 8. Dr. Octopus For Doc Ock, it’s really the tentacles that steal the show, they’re both ridiculously powerful and quite useful. I bet there are times when you wish you had an extra hand spare, don't you? In both the movie and the comics Dr. Otto Octavious is fused with his mechanical arms, learning to control them with will alone. Although, in the comics he’s in control of the arms but in the film, it's the other way around, with the device imposing its will on him. 7. Symbiote Spider-Man The black symbiote Spider-Man costume just looks badass, there’s no real need for explanation here. It represented a massive boost in powers, change in attitude and eventually led to the introduction of a new fresh villain. It was so popular that when Peter Parker finally got rid of the symbiote, he had another black Spider-Man outfit made. Known for having the dual woes of being a teen and having a bunch of costumed freaks repeatedly try to murder him, Spider-Man is a character who slips in and out of some pretty bleak narrative and the black outfit is reflective of some of the darker times in the character’s life. 6. Thor Let’s face it, Vikings are pretty badass. If you were to tell me you don’t want to be one you’d be a liar. So what can be more awesome than a Viking? A Viking God of course! The film version of this outfit is pretty much in line with the Ultimates version of the Marvel character, with a sleek smooth finish to the armour design that take the best of medieval design and space age futurism and combines it all into one ass-kicking package. Rather curiously he’s transformed from a straight up Norse God to an alien super being for whom the ideas of magic and technology are indistinguishable. 5. Valkyrie So while the ladies have been finding their knees suddenly don’t work as good as they used to after seeing Thor on the big screen, you have to wonder what’s in store for the guys (ok, there is admittedly a lot of lewd fan service in comics). Meet, Valkyrie, the inevitable female counterpart to Thor and one of a few credible female threats that doesn’t look like she learnt to dress in some kind of bizarre clown brothel. Obviously with the evolution of the Thor outfit, Valkyrie’s outfit as become more modern (and less skimpy) too, but it's still an awesome costume. 4. Hit Monkey He’s only really wearing a black suit with a red tie and shades, but what can be more awesome than a monkey dressed in a suit? One that also happens to be a professional hit-man. This is a monkey that obsessively hunts down known contract killers, even having a prolonged tussle with Deadpool and Spider-Man. And just in case I haven’t hammered home why this looks amazing… It’s a monkey in a suit, with guns. 3. Punisher Speaking of dark and menacing, the Punisher is probably one of the darker anti-heroes out there. He’s not above murder, torture and extortion to get what he wants and he’s also had a non-canon spinoff proving that he’s more than capable of killing every single superhero and villain in the Marvel universe without any powers. The thing that makes his costume so awesome is the simplicity of the latter outfits. Originally, he started as one of the spandex crowd, but he’s been toned down (visually) to be something a little more dark and realistic looking, a lot more like the character depicted in the two most recent movies. This combination of trench-coat, body armour, holsters and ammo belts looks pretty threatening and is open to a little situational customization. 2. Nick Fury The Ultimates version of Nick Fury was insanely cool for one shockingly simple reason. He was Samuel L. Jackson. I’m not saying that it’s because Fury is played by him in the films, it’s that the character was revised for the Marvel Ultimates comics to deliberately look like the actor. Samuel L. Jackson not being cool anymore is a sign of the end times, so we can only hope this look endures. S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury has undergone a radical change in design to get to the Samuel L. Jackson look. Before, he used to be a middle aged white guy in a rather silly looking blue spandex outfit (there is no way that was military issue). Now he's got the sleek, dark leather trench-coat, black turtle-neck and trousers and a sensible shoulder holster. The only thing they did keep was the eye-patch. 1. Iron Man Let’s face it, he was always going to be top of the list. His outfit is a smart weapon (containing many more smart weapons), suit of armour and mode of transport all rolled into one. The colour scheme is pretty awesome, with the rich warm metallic colours and a variety of light sources in the helmet, hands, feet and chest. Night or day this costume really draws the eye, it’s impressive and imposing without necessarily trying to be dark or scary. As if that wasn’t enough, there are also a variety of different designs for the suit.
