2. Elf
I have a sneaking suspicion that Elf probably wouldn’t feature so high in the majority of people’s favorite Will Ferrell films. Despite that, Elf is a special film to me, there is no time of the year that I can’t watch this film and when Christmas does roll around, you can bet your life that I’ll be watching it on christmas eve.
Elf is pure, simple, unadulterated joy. It doesn’t rely on rude jokes, swearing or any of your standard modern comedy tools, it’s just a lovely movie. Â There are few movies that are truly able to strip away my natural British cynicism of the world, Elf happens to be one of those that’s able to do so. As soon as the opening music begins I immediately become the child I once was, and at the end of the day, what’s better than that?
I could write an essay on my favourite Elf moments, but I’ll spare you all that and just mention a couple of my personal highlights. Ferrell’s reaction each time he opens a Jack-in-a-box, eating gum off the street and getting into a full-scale brawl with a fake Santa…a truly classic Will Ferrell film.
1. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy
There was never really going to be any other selection at number one was there? Come off it. Anchorman is without doubt one of the funniest movies I have ever seen.
This isn’t just Ferrell at his best, this is an excellent ensemble performance featuring the hilarious antics of Paul Rudd, Steve Carell and many others. Let’s face it though, this is without doubt Will Ferrell’s show and as Ron Burgundy he turns in one of the greatest comedy performances in modern memory.
The gags/lines come so fast and so often that even the times when one doesn’t quite hit the mark another one is always just around the corner. Yet again it’s just how expertly Ferrell interacts with others that makes the film, be it with Rudd, Carell, Applegate or even Baxter the dog, each and every exchange in Anchorman is rife with comedy gold. From jazz flute to the backstreet brawl, Will Ferrell‘s Anchorman is truly an ‘Afternoon Delight’.
With Anchorman 2 confirmed, it’s time to get excited to see Ron Burgundy and the gang in action yet again!
