Who Is Doctor Strange?

After 13 films in eight years, we find ourselves on the crest of a brand new wave of movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe – and it is Doctor Strange that's spearheading this shake-up. The studio has released a veritable avalanche of promotional footage, specifically geared toward highlighting this new perspective, as the giant of the comic book adaptation introduces magic and mysticism to its stable of superheroes.

In the comic book stories, Doctor Strange has a number of supporting characters. Beyond his mentor, The Ancient One, he also relies heavily upon his friend and assistant, Wong. The character of Clea has provided him with a love interest at various points, despite being revealed to be the niece of one of Doctor Strange’s primary enemies – Dormammu. The sorcerer has also worked closely alongside the sorceress Topaz, as well as Rintrah – a mystic from another dimension.

In terms of enemies, Doctor Strange has many. In the comic books, fellow mystic Baron Mordo proves to be one of his most enduring nemeses – although in the upcoming film he appears to be a friend to Strange. The sorcerer has also clashed with Nightmare (the evil ruler of the Dream Dimension), and a series of Mindless Ones, which are extra-dimensional creatures with no will of their own, summoned by magic to do the bidding of others.

Perhaps his greatest foe, however, is Dormammu – the warlord of the Dark Dimension. With powers that include energy projection, possession, necromancy, resizing, teleportation, and matter manipulation, Dormammu has overseen the corruption of Baron Mordo, and has worked with Loki to destroy the Avengers and Defenders. He has also been in conflict with Odin, Hulk, Ghost Rider, and the Guardians Of The Galaxy.
