10 Fantastic Superheroes From The Future

For a genre that continually reboots itself to retain the status quo, superhero comics sure do spend a lot of time wondering what will happen to their characters down the road. Visiting an alternate vision of the timeline or some dark – sometimes it’s good, but mostly not - future is a favourite pastime of many comic books. Naturally, then, a heap of superheroes who are citizens of centuries into the future have been created over the years, usually finding their way back into the past - er, present - to meet up with the original heroes that inspired them.

The only character not initially created in the comics, Terry McGinnis was the central character of fondly-remembered animated series Batman Beyond, which ran from 1999-2001.

Set in a cyberpunk future version of Gotham, Terry is trained up as the second Batman by an elderly Bruce Wayne. Decked out with a flying Batmobile and a hi-tech suit with its own artificial intelligence, the former teen tearaway makes up for his past sins by continuing the legacy of the Dark Knight.

Terry McGinnis became such a hit with the fans that he was quickly introduced into the comic universe and has gone on to star in a steady stream of solo titles ever since. As a blend of Batman, Iron Man and Spider-Man, Terry McGinnis is arguably the best thing the DC animated universe gifted the Batman mythology outside of Harley Quinn. Thanks to Terry, we can rest assured that Gotham will always have a Caped Crusader to protect it.
