A Philadelphia couple’s outdoor couch vanished from their fourth-floor balcony, and a neighbor says it later turned up in an alley

A 60 lb. couch apparently vanished off a balcony.

Missing packages and stolen patio chairs are common complaints in city apartment buildings. However, a Philadelphia couple appears to be dealing with something stranger after their outdoor couch apparently vanished from a fourth-floor balcony, according to The Nerd Stash. Jessica Massey first learned about the missing item when her boyfriend called her to ask, “Do you know where our outdoor couch went?”

Massey initially thought he was pulling a prank, but it quickly became clear he was just as surprised as she was. The apartment setup makes the situation stranger, as there appears to be no easy way to reach the balcony. The only paths to it are reportedly through an adjacent neighbor’s balcony or down from the roof. Wind seems unlikely to move 60 pounds of furniture, though Massey has floated the idea that strong gusts may have carried it off.

Massey started her search by checking with her neighbors, who initially had no information. The mystery took a turn when her upstairs neighbor apparently gave a specific account. “She tells us that she saw the couch yesterday on the street and then later in the day she saw it in the alley,” Massey said.

A neighbor says the couch somehow ended up down in an alley

That account suggests the furniture may have traveled some distance after leaving the balcony. It is still unclear how it reached the ground, as the balcony sits four stories up. Several commenters on her videos have also pointed out that a small table on the same balcony apparently stayed put.

The search then moved to street level as Massey looked for video evidence. She noticed that neighbors across the street have a Ring camera, so she wrote them a letter to ask for help. They checked their footage and reportedly did not see it fall or get moved.

Not every neighbor is as willing to check their cameras. One couple said a neighbor with a doorbell camera refused to share footage after they woke up to find their car totaled overnight.

However, Massey’s neighbors did notice the couch was “wrapped up” at one point, according to Massey. The detail could suggest someone may have moved it on purpose, though no footage appears to show who handled it.

Massey and her boyfriend also checked security cameras from nearby buildings, as the Ring footage left the key moment unexplained. Meanwhile, a man on the street reportedly walked up to them and asked, “Oh, the tan couch? The one on the street yesterday?” “We have three people who have confirmed that they have seen the couch outside,” Massey said.

Apartment living has produced other odd discoveries online, including a new tenant who found a hidden note about the neighbors left behind by the previous occupants. Massey has not said whether she and her boyfriend ever recovered the couch.
