The downside of when self-contained series end on a crazy cliffhanger is that you never know how long it’ll be before the sequel arrives. But when they finally do get here, they’re all the more rewarding. So seems to be the case with Spider-Men II, which has five years of anticipation behind it.

The added appeal to this story is that it’s paying off one of the biggest mysteries Marvel has left gestating. Basically, the Miles Morales we’ve come to love, who originated in the Ultimate universe, has since come over to the 616 – Marvel’s main continuity – when the publisher decided to streamline its line of titles. Along the way, he met up with the original wallcrawler in Peter Parker, before later discovering that there’s a Mile Morales already native to the 616! Furthermore, the truth behind this doppelganger is said to be shocking, and honestly, we wouldn’t expect any less.

Spidey stalwart Brian Michael Bendis, who is, of course, returning to pen the series, had this to say:

“One of my favorite things about a shared universe, is that on top of what you’re writing for the characters, other things are happening to the characters, like now Miles is in the new universe, and now he’s a part of the Champions, and half of [Civil War II] was people fighting over his head, so things have changed in his life, and his relationship to the Marvel Universe is completely different than it was in the first series and that’s exciting.”

With that, we’re excited to bring you the first preview images to be released, which you can view in the gallery at the top. In addition to four several covers being made available, Sara Pichelli’s unlettered interiors should be enough to tide you over until Spider-Men II #1 arrives in comic shops on July 12. Seriously, you have to love how great of a job she does staging dynamic action scenes.
