Hunter Biden is reportedly moving to roll out a meme coin linked to the laptop that became a major political issue. On Monday morning, The Wall Street Journal reported that Biden, the son of former President Joe Biden, was starting his own cryptocurrency.
Not long after that account appeared, Biden posted “$LAPTOP” on X and included a date of September 9. He also posted a compilation video featuring news outlets and Trump administration officials discussing the computer.
CNN reported that Biden took the laptop to a computer repair shop in Delaware in April 2019. Then the FBI reportedly took possession of the device five months later.

CNN reported that emails, documents, and financial records were on the laptop. The laptop’s contents have fueled ongoing political scrutiny of Biden, such as when he discussed potentially running for president in 2028. The report also said the device held explicit photos that appeared to show Biden with women in hotel rooms and Biden using drugs.
CNN reported that the laptop and what was on it drew heavy attention, especially from media outlets friendly to Donald Trump, before the 2020 election. The laptop controversy has fueled ongoing public sparring between the Biden and Trump families, such as when Hunter Biden challenged Donald Trump Jr. to a fight in a social media post criticizing the White House UFC event. Hunter Biden’s lawyers have said the files were manipulated.
Biden has spoken in recent months on social media, Substack, and podcasts about public complaints, including the laptop. In a June post on X, he wrote, as quoted by CNN, “What they found was evidence of a man who suffered for a period of time from a severe addiction to crack cocaine and alcohol.”
In that same post, he went on to write that prosecutors did not find evidence of corruption or any crime beyond those related to drug use.
Biden has also spoken in support of digital currencies. He wrote on X that Congress needs “to truly understand the value and potential utility of cryptocurrency.” In a separate post, he called “decentralized digital currency” the “inevitable future.”
Other public figures have already launched cryptocurrencies of their own. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump launched a pair of meme coins before his return to office in January 2025. The report stated they gained $1 billion while most investors lost money.
Traders often buy and sell meme coins because of trends, novelty, or possible gains. Biden’s cryptocurrency will trade on Base, a network created by Coinbase Global, according to the Journal report citing people familiar with the matter.
