Firefighters block an entire street and break out their big ladder – all because a doctor asked for a paperclip

“We just want to play with our toys!!!!”

Recently, a doctor’s request for a paperclip turned into a full-scale neighborhood event. It all began when she accidentally locked herself out of her apartment. So, when Dr. Rachel was on her way home, she decided to check if the local Fire Department could help her out with a quick, DIY fix, but they wanted to help. What followed was a spectacle that racked up over 714K views on Instagram and TikTok.

In her Instagram caption, Rachel explained that she and her companions were walking home from dinner when they noticed the fire department garage door was open. Thinking nothing of it, they approached the crew and asked if they might have a paper clip to help pick the lock on her door. According to Rachel, the firefighters joked that they looked too young to be doctors, and instead of a paper clip, “they dispatched the truck.”

In the video, she wrote that the firefighters asked why she didn’t ask for help, and she admitted they didn’t want to be a bother. The footage captures the team strategizing how to reach her third-storey window. Before she knew it, the entire street was effectively shut down, and as Rachel put it, it was quite embarrassing to watch the neighborhood gather in amusement.

They broke out all the toys

The crew initially tried a smaller ladder, but it wasn’t tall enough to reach the window. For a moment, Rachel thought they were packing up to leave. Then the firefighters broke out the big ladder. Rachel’s video shows the ladder being extended toward the building while she clarifies on-screen, “We are locked out. Not in danger!!! There is no fire!!”

There was no fire, yet the scene looked like a major emergency response. She even included a screenshot from Citizen.com showing that the top story in the area was simply, “Person locked out of residence.” Eventually, a firefighter climbed the massive ladder. The on screen text stated, “He’s in!!!!! He shimmied in and unlocked the front door.” As he walked out of her building after, she reminded the viewer that she had only asked for a paperclip.

People in the Instagram comments section seem to have a pretty good idea of why the fire department went to such lengths. One user, with some personal insight, commented, “Am a firefighter. An excuse to set up the aerial ladder on a scene? They’re gonna do that every day they can!”

There were many other users who echoed this sentiment, with one suggesting, “They just wanted to use the toys they never get to touch.” Another playfully defended the crew, stating, “HEY DONT JUDGE!!! We just want to play with our toys!!!!”

It’s worth noting that while this specific incident was a bit over-the-top, fire departments do have a long history of community outreach. In cities like New York, the FDNY Foundation works hard to fund programs that connect the department with the public.

They run initiatives ranging from fire safety education and smoke alarm installations to CPR training and youth development programs like the FDNY Explorers. While those programs are generally more structured than a lock-out assist, they all serve the goal of building strong relationships between the department and the neighborhoods they serve.

Some commenters on TikTok offered a more practical explanation. One suggested, “They like doing stuff like this for training, I think. They get to help, have practice and no one is in danger.” Rachel seemed to take it all in stride, responding, “I hope so!! I had fun!”

Another user shared her own stressful story about being locked out with a disabled child inside, noting that she was mortified when 911 arrived with lights and sirens for a non-critical emergency. Rachel validated that experience, replying, “Your reason was so valid!! We did not have anyone locked in but the key.”

Ultimately, one of the Instagram commenters nailed the response on the head, with a perfect summary: “The unquenchable urge to over-engineer a solution to a problem.”

Now, while Rachel engaged with the Fire Department because she was locked out, another TikToker had to call for help when she was locked in at the doctor’s office. Of course, sometimes you can have completely different non-emergencies, like finding old explosives while cleaning the yard.
