Illinois homeowner threatens to call ICE after allegedly refusing to pay Hispanic workers who built his fence, so they tear it all apart

A group of Hispanic contractors went viral after a video appeared to show them tearing down a newly built fence at a homeowner’s property in Illinois after allegedly not being paid for the work.

The footage quickly racked up millions of views across Instagram, TikTok and X, with viewers split over whether the workers were justified in taking the fence apart or had crossed a legal line by doing so.

The incident came to light after Instagram user @el.compa.cesar, a contractor involved in the project, uploaded a video explaining why the crew was dismantling the fence.

The owner allegedly threaten to call ICE on the workers

According to Cesar, the homeowner had refused to pay the workers for their labor and materials. The video then shows the men beginning to remove the fence panels and wooden framework.

The homeowner soon confronts them, repeatedly telling the workers to “get the f–ck off my property” while holding up his phone and threatening to call the police.

The workers, however, keep going. They begin taking the fence apart piece by piece, removing the panels and breaking down the wooden framework until the newly constructed fence is completely gone.

As the video spread across social media, the story surrounding the confrontation grew as well.

Several accounts on X claimed the homeowner had allegedly threatened to contact Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in an attempt to have the workers deported rather than pay what he owed them.

Those claims, however, have not been independently verified by the original creators of the video.

Some commentators also claimed the plan backfired because the workers allegedly had proper documentation, leaving authorities unable or unwilling to intervene in what was essentially a payment dispute.

TikToker Aaron Parnas was among those who highlighted the broader issues surrounding the incident, while the video drew significant attention from people in the contracting and immigrant communities.

For many viewers, the footage was another example of alleged wage theft involving contractors, something that can be difficult to prove but becomes much harder to ignore when the dispute is captured on camera.

There are other legal options

There are legal avenues available to contractors who are not paid for their work. In Illinois, contractors may be able to pursue a mechanic’s lien against a property, which can create complications for a homeowner looking to sell or refinance until the underlying dispute is resolved.

However, pursuing unpaid wages or materials through the legal system can take time and money, which can be especially difficult for small independent crews.

In this case, Cesar and his team appear to have chosen a much more immediate solution by taking apart the work they had completed.

That does not necessarily mean the workers were legally entitled to enter the property and remove the fence. Depending on the circumstances, dismantling or removing property could potentially expose them to legal consequences.

For now, the viral video has largely produced a different kind of verdict online. While some viewers questioned whether the workers should have taken matters into their own hands, many others celebrated the crew for refusing to leave their labor and materials behind after allegedly not being paid.
