‘Let’s get this bread’ meme and origin, explained

How did this weirdo meme ever even catch on?

Life is all about the hustle. We hustle at work, we hustle in side businesses, we hustle to build up our social media followers — in short, we hustle our buns off. Everyone can identify with waking up early, going to bed late, and hustling all day in between.

But what the heck does “Let’s get this bread” mean and where did the meme come from?

The “Let’s Get This Bread” meme first became very popular on Twitter. Employees who were feeling exhausted at work and questioning why they work so hard shared images of bagels, buns, and loaves of bread along with captions complaining about work or making fun of being tired, or encouraging everyone to work hard to “get this bread.”

“Getting bread” is slang for making money, so at the end of a hard work period when it’s payday, people like to post this meme in a positive way, as in, “We worked so hard, now we get paid!”

This meme makes people laugh and inspires them when they’re in the thick of the daily grind.

People also post the Bread meme in an ironic way, making fun of the concepts of working hard and wanting to make a lot of money. But where did the phrase come from, originally?

The “get this bread” phrase began in 2007 after rapper Rich Boy released his track, “Let’s Get This Paper.” The first verse of the track contains the lyrics: “Hey, let’s get this bread, homie.”

Ten years later, the phrase got picked up on Twitter, and now you can find this meme on all social platforms in the form of photos, drawings, animations, and videos.
