Jamie Lenio (jamiecoolbeans) is currently pleading for public support as she navigates a complex and distressing divorce while stationed in Germany. The US Marine spouse recently shared a video on Instagram stating a fear that “I’m terrified that I’m going to be trapped here with my children indefinitely.”
In her video, Jamie appeared visibly stressed while speaking directly to the camera. She claimed that she has been a military spouse for 16 years, supporting her husband through various deployments, missions, and relocations to places like Japan and North Carolina. Now, she said her marriage is ending following more than 10 years of purported infidelity and gaslighting.
She alleged that one of her husband’s affairs was substantiated by an inspector general investigation at Africom and involved his direct superior, a married one-star army general. According to Jamie, her husband is currently on a legal hold due to this but has been retained in the military. She claimed that the situation got incredibly tense when it came to their children.
A fight over custody
Jamie claimed that her husband took their children’s passports, both diplomatic and tourist, from their home in front of their nine-year-old daughter without her knowledge. She expressed her frustration with the current legal landscape, noting, “I never imagined getting divorced could determine whether I’m allowed to go home to the United States with my children.”
She expressed, “I’m facing the possibility that because my children have lived in Germany, that the German courts could potentially take jurisdiction over custody. And I could potentially be stuck in Germany indefinitely. Because if we are still here by the time he is filed and it all goes through, then I am at their jurisdiction. And my husband is pursuing custody here. He is trying to establish a future here and become a contractor.”
“I feel insanely trapped,” she said in the video. Jamie emphasizes that she is not asking to secretly leave with her children, but rather for the Marine Corps to facilitate a return home so that they can resolve the matter in the United States. She notes that she is not a German citizen and that the family’s presence in Germany is solely due to her husband’s active duty orders.
“I am pleading with my country for help. I am pleading with the Marine Corps that I supported for 16 years. I am asking someone, anyone with authority to look into this situation and say, there has to be a way to get this family home,” she said. It should be noted Jamie’s claims cannot be verified.
According to Military OneSource, the government resource for military families, divorce proceedings can be significantly more complicated when they occur overseas. While military legal assistance offices can provide mediation and advice on issues like child custody and the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, jurisdiction remains a major hurdle. Interestingly, it was discovered that some service members recently married for a quick cash payout.
Military OneSource advises that it is best to file for divorce in the United States, as a U.S. court may not recognize a divorce filed overseas. Furthermore, while the military may pay for the moving expenses of a nonmilitary spouse returning, the process is fraught with red tape.
Instagram was mostly supportive. One user shared, “I went thru a USMC overseas divorce – I finally had to contact my state Senators to have them assist when Command couldn’t.” Another user recommended reaching out to the US Embassy or consulate to request emergency passports for the children, noting that such requests must originate from the United States.
Other commenters urged Jamie to document everything, create a paper trail, and contact the Family Advocacy Program to get help. Conversely, some users pointed out the difficulties inherent in custody battles, noting that both parents have rights to their children.
To assist with the mounting costs of this transition, a friend of Jamie’s established a GoFundMe page. The funds are intended to help her secure legal representation in both Germany and the United States, as well as cover relocation and initial housing expenses.
In the fundraiser description, Jamie noted another potential reality. Since she doesn’t have a SOFA status, she can’t get a job and is at risk of being deported if the German courts decide on jurisdiction, potentially leaving her children behind.
Jamie asked her viewers to contact their senators and representatives, as well as the Marine Corps, to bring attention to her case. She is asking for someone to step up and provide a path home, asserting, “I should not have to fight this hard just to get myself and my kids back to our own country.” She claimed that her experience wasn’t unique, noting, “Military families are not prepared for what can happen when a marriage breaks down overseas.”
