Woman’s husband comes home and sits at the kitchen table. Then her real husband calls and says he’s still 20 mins away: ‘I saw his face change’

She faced some odd questions before her husband called

A woman says she came face-to-face with something wearing her husband’s body while she was cooking dinner alone at home. She shared the story on TikTok under the account @scaredwithjess, and the video has since been viewed 7.6 million times.

Jess said this story is about a woman who said that something came into her house, but it wasn’t her husband. She said the woman was making pasta when she heard the front door open. She assumed it was her husband coming home early from work, something he occasionally did.

She called out, “You’re home early,” and after a pause, heard a flat, one-word reply: “Yeah.” Jess said when she turned around, a figure wearing her husband’s work shirt and face was standing in the kitchen doorway, but something about it felt wrong.

The figure asked odd questions before sitting down at the table

Jess said the figure did not greet her the way her husband normally would, and it did not walk over, kiss her cheek, or drop its bag by the wall. Instead, it stood watching her, and she said it looked like it was “trying to remember what I’d look like from that angle.”

Jess said she asked if everything was okay. The figure then asked a series of strange questions, including whether anyone had called that day, whether she had unlocked the back door, and finally, “Did you tell anyone I live here?” Jess said her stomach dropped at that point.

When she asked what it meant, Jess said the figure did not answer. She said it walked into the kitchen, pulled out a chair, sat down at the table, folded its hands, and stared at her. Jess said she turned off the stove without thinking.

She said her phone then rang, and the screen showed it was her husband calling. She described the figure at the table as “the thing wearing him” and said it smiled as she picked up the call.

She said her husband told her he was leaving work and would be home in 20 minutes. Jess said the woman, unable to speak at first, was asked by her husband why she was whispering. Looking at the figure still seated at the table, she quietly asked her husband, “If you’re not home, who is sitting in my kitchen?”

She said her husband went silent for a moment, with traffic sounds audible in the background, before he sharply asked, “What?” At that point, she said the figure stood up slowly, keeping eye contact with her, then turned and walked toward the stairs.

Jess said the woman told her husband it was heading upstairs. She said he reacted immediately, and she heard his car door slam through the phone. She said he told her to get out of the house right away, repeating it louder when she did not move.

Jess said she then heard heavy, slow footsteps coming from upstairs. She backed toward the front door and said she had asked her husband who could be upstairs if it was not him. She said he replied that he had left the attic ladder down that morning.

She said she ran out of the house barefoot, without her purse or keys, and went to a neighbor’s porch. The woman said her husband arrived about ten minutes later and went inside with the neighbor to check the house. They did not find anyone. The attic ladder was down, as he had said, but the attic itself contained only insulation, boxes, and old Christmas decorations.

Jess said her husband repeatedly asked if she had fallen asleep, imagined things, or had a visitor who left before he got home. She said she understood why he was trying to make sense of it and would have reacted the same way.

However, she said there was a damp handprint left on the kitchen table where the figure had been sitting. She also said that when her husband pushed the attic ladder back up, something shifted on top of it, and it was not the sound of a rat or the house settling. Unsettling encounters with unexplained figures can leave a lasting impression, like when a woman froze after spotting a figure lurking in her back alley at night.

According to Jess, he stopped, looked up into the attic opening, and she saw his face change before he quickly shut the ladder. “I saw his face change,” she said. The couple stayed in a hotel that night, and Jess said her husband has not said much about what he saw in the attic.

The woman also revealed a detail she said she never told her husband. As the figure walked past a hallway mirror on its way to the stairs, she said she caught its reflection for a moment. She said the body still looked like her husband’s, but “the face wasn’t his anymore.” The video ends with Jess telling viewers, “good luck sleeping tonight.”

Comments on the video included a range of reactions. One user wrote, “I would have taken a picture for proof that I wasn’t going crazy.” Another offered an explanation for what the entity might have been, referring to it as “A MIMIC,” describing it as something that looks and sounds like other people while imitating them.

Other commenters focused on the timing of the video, with one writing, “it’s night time so i’m just gonna save this and come back in the morning ok,” and another adding, “I swear these kinds of videos only pop up at night lol.” Unexplained encounters captured on video sparked debate before too, like when a Dallas woman shared dashcam footage of lightning striking her husband’s truck on the freeway.
