10 Characters We Wish The Vampire Diaries Would Have Brought Back

It's been an entire summer since The Vampire Diaries left fans with their collective jaws on the floor after the heartbreaking season five finale. Now that we've had some time to grieve, and realize that Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) are not gone for good thanks to executive producer Julie Plec confirming that both actors are contracted as series regulars for season six, it's time to celebrate the return of fan favorite Alaric Saltzman (Matt Davis).

1) Mason Lockwood (Taylor Kinney)

Mason was already a lost cause when viewers were first introduced to him in season two. He came to town for his brother’s funeral, but he was already part of Katherine’s much larger plan to evade Klaus. Before this, Tyler was pretty much in the dark when it came to his werewolf genealogy. The mystery surrounding why Mayor Lockwood (Rob Pralgo) was affected by the device that took down the supernaturals during the Founders Day festivities became clear pretty quickly when the full moon rolled around and Mason took to all fours.

The second time that Mason came to town, in ghost form, he was on a revenge kick. Sour that Damon ripped out his heart after he secured the moonstone, Mason was intent on making him apologize for his misdeeds. But, luckily, there was also the pressing issue of helping his nephew out of a jam, which took center stage.

Let’s face it. Both times Mason showed up in Mystic Falls, he was set up to fail. And the time he was tricked into activating his werewolf curse, Katherine was playing puppet master. It’s no secret that she looks at other people as collateral damage and Mason quickly became just that. Now that Tyler is lacking any blood relatives, it would be an ideal time for one such supernatural to return to the show. Call it a consolation prize.

The Vampire Diaries returns to The CW for season six on October 2nd at 8/7 p.m. Will you be watching?
