10 Easter Eggs You Might Have Missed In The Defenders

After two years and five seasons of television, Marvel's The Defenders is finally here. The eight episode miniseries unites the stars of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist for the first time. Naturally, it also follows in the footsteps of those shows by featuring a lot of tantalizing easter eggs, references and callbacks.

During the big climactic fight between the Defenders and the Hand in the secret cavern underneath Midland Circle, Wu Tang Clan’s “Protect Ya Neck” plays on the soundtrack. Apart from making the scene even more awesome, the song choice is a fitting one as it has a couple of Marvel connections.

The obvious one is that Wu Tang Clan have been a favourite of the Netflix shows so far, with their music featuring on both the soundtracks for Luke Cage and Iron Fist. The Clan’s RZA also directed an episode of the latter series.

Specifically, “Protect Ya Neck” also features a reference to Spider-Man (“Swinging through your town like your neighbourhood Spider-Man”). Though fans would love to see Peter Parker cross paths with the Defenders – specifically his comic book buddy Daredevil – we’re unlikely to have that happen and this lyric is probably going to be as close as we’ll get.

It’s worth mentioning too that, during the fight that the song plays over, we see Madame Gao form something like the crane karate stance. This is likely the latest nod that she’s the MCU version of the Crane Mother, one of Iron Fist’s major foes in the comics.
