10 Returning TV Shows That You Need To Watch This Fall

As is the case every year, this Fall will see the debut of countless new shows. Just some of those on the way include small screen continuations of movies like Limitless and The Minority Report, as well as even more comic book adaptations in the form of Lucifer and Supergirl. Throw in original dramas like The Bastard Executioner, Blindspot, and even a new take on The Muppets, and we're all going to be very spoiled for choice. However, there are also a long list of returning shows which are all must-watch TV for very different reasons. With each year that passes, it becomes increasingly difficult to stay invested in a long list of series thanks to there being such a large selection on offer. Inevitably, some shows just reach a point where they're no longer worth watching, too, so deciding which deserve your attention is ultimately no easy feat. Below, you will find ten returning TV shows which are most definitely worth your time. Some have been around more than a decade, while others are relatively new, but regardless of how much time you've spent with them in the past, these should all be a priority this Fall. From superheroes to sitcoms and prequels, there's a lot on offer, so you may want to start binge watching now in order to catch up on many of these... 10) Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been on the cusp of cancellation for a while, with falling ratings which are a million miles away from the numbers it received upon its debut in 2013. However, despite a weak start, the ABC series drastically improved when it tied into Captain America: The Winter Soldier and has since continued to be entertaining viewing for comic book fans. While it sometimes tries a little too hard to link up to what's going on elsewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the show now appears to be moving towards superpowers as season three will see Skye embrace her new role as Quake when she and Agent Coulson assemble the Secret Warriors (a team of Inhumans). If you've yet to watch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., this is a great jumping on point thanks to the new status quo, and current viewers have lots to be excited about, too. 9) Brooklyn Nine-Nine There really aren't all that many great sitcoms on these days, and those that do air are either quickly cancelled or forgotten thanks to repetitive and stale premises. Old favourites like The Big Bang Theory and New Girl are still around, but if those aren't your kind of show, there really isn't that much to choose from right now. Thank goodness then for Brooklyn Nine Nine, a quirky comedy set in a police station which brings back fond memories of Scrubs. It's a lot of fun, and while it hasn't been a runaway ratings hit, the show is both hilarious and packed full of great characters (the latter isn't something many other current sitcoms can boast). With Captain Holt taking on a different role in season three, Bill Hader (Trainwreck) is set to take charge of the unruly precinct, and his involvement alone makes Brooklyn Nine Nine worth returning to. 8) Gotham The first season of the Batman prequel split opinions, with the cheesy tone often clashing with the darker elements of the series. Despite some bumps in the road, Gotham was for the most part an enjoyable take on the very early years of characters like Bruce Wayne and Jim Gordon, and while it's sometimes a little hard not to be annoyed by the lack of respect to the source material, even the most die-hard comic book fans should be able to accept it as an alternate take on the origin story of the Caped Crusader and his greatest enemies. Season two will somewhat controversially tackle The Joker's story, with The Penguin's rise to power and Bruce's discovery of what one day might become the Batcave all set to play key roles moving forwards. While Gotham haters probably won't want to return (it doesn't appear as if the show will have altered much), if you're already invested in it, then it should be a must-watch. 7) Homeland Season three of Homeland split opinions. A controversial lack of screentime for series staple Brody was taken a step further when the writers shockingly killed him off in the finale, changing the show's status quo in drastic fashion. While there were those who then decided not to return to it, the rebooted season four was a success, and season five looks set to also shake things up in a major way. When we pick up with Carrie, she's out of the intelligence business and finds herself in Berlin, a very different setting for a show which has previously been centred around both the United States and the Middle East. Under the employ of a billionaire, Carrie will apparently be dragged back into the spy game when Saul comes to her for help, and while it doesn't seem like Homeland will be resurrecting Brody in a 24 style twist just yet, this still sounds good! 6) Supernatural Incredibly, Supernatural is entering its eleventh season this year. The CW series has had its low points during the past decade (here's looking at you, Leviathans), but Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki make even the weakest episodes easy to enjoy. Their chemistry keeps the show going for sure, but so do the great storylines and kick ass action sequences, and so there's no denying the fact that Supernatural is one of the most underrated series out there. For those of you who have yet to check it out, diving into season eleven may seem like an intimidating prospect, but the fact that the show often resets with a new threat every year makes it easy enough to dive into even if many of the references will be lost on you. It honestly feels like there's years left in Supernatural, so don't fret about it being cancelled either; it does well on The CW! 5) Arrow After the stellar second year which saw Oliver Queen take on Deathstroke, the third season of Arrow was something of a disappointment. Ra's al Ghul was a pale imitation of his comic book counterpart, and while fans of "Olicity" were no doubt happy, pretty much everyone else was sick of their tedious interactions by the end of the premiere! So, after all that, why bother watching season four? Well, it appears as if the series will once again head in the right direction as The Arrow finally becomes Green Arrow and a new foe emerges in the form of Captain America: The First Avenger star Neal McDonough as Damien Darhk. Throw in a surprise appearance from Matt Ryan's John Constantine and what sound like some big episodes setting up the events of upcoming spinoff Legends of Tomorrow, and Arrow could just end up returning to its glory days. 4) South Park South Park is set to return for a nineteenth season this Fall, and as per usual, no one has any idea what to expect from the premiere. The tight production schedule of the series sees to that (they're put together in a week in order to make the episodes as timely and relevant as possible), but it's hard not to be excited about what subjects they'll choose to poke fun at over the next few months. Star Wars: The Force Awakens and vaping are two very popular suggestions, and it's going to be interesting to see if this season does the same as last year's by having a greater level of continuity between instalments. Love it or hate it, South Park always brings something fun and interesting to the table, and there's no reason to think that this next season won't do the same. For that reason, this is by far the most must-see returning animated series. 3) The Walking Dead The Walking Dead didn't do a great job with The Governor, and while that left many fans of the comic book series disappointed, it certainly didn't have much of an impact on the show's record breaking ratings. Since then, the series has vastly improved, first with a batch of standalone episodes, and then with a major status quo shift which has seen Rick Grimes and his fellow survivors find salvation at last...or so it seems. With fan-favourite character Morgan set to make his return and a possible fracture in the group as Rick's actions continue to split opinions, season six of The Walking Dead could just be the best yet. It's even been revealed that the premiere will feature 654 zombies in what sounds like an insane set piece. That alone makes it worth checking out, but plenty of character from the comics are also expected to be introduced this year, which should get fans excited. 2) Fargo When it was revealed that a Fargo TV series was in the works, fans of the movie were understandably sceptical. Surely it would never live up to that classic offering from Joel and Ethan Coen? Well, it did, and after a stellar season which saw the likes of Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton take on leading roles, the second is going to serve as a prequel of sorts to the events of the first. Patrick Wilson is set to play the younger version of Lou Solverson (Keith Carradine took on that role in season one of Fargo), and while plot details are mostly being kept under wraps, it will once again be a crime story full of blood, murder, and intrigue as well as an expansion of events alluded to in the first batch of episodes. Throw in an impressive cast which includes Kirsten Dunst, Nick Offerman, and Ted Danson, and there are lots of reasons to tune into this. 1) The Flash No one expected The Flash to be any good. After all, The CW don't have a solid track record when it comes to superpowers (see: Smallville), and surely the Scarlet Speedster's abilities could never be convincingly portrayed on a television budget? Simply put, the show looks amazing, and the quality of both the weekly and overarching stories in season one quickly established The Flash as one of the best small screen superhero adaptations to date. Embracing the comic books while simultaneously providing a fresh spin of the source material, the series went from strength to strength in its first year and promises to continue doing the same as it introduces everyone from Jay Garrick to Zoom in another action-packed season full of great twists and turns.
