10 Things We Want To See In Supergirl Season 3

Supergirl season 2 ended this past week with an exciting, emotional finale. It brought to a close a mixed year for the show, which saw it join The CW's DC line-up - something that in some ways improved its sophomore run and in others ways, worsened it. On the one hand, we had Superman, more crossovers with the rest of the Arrowverse TV shows and some fun new additions to the cast. On the other, however, the show arguably became two ambitious for its own good and struggled to keep so many plates spinning. Still, it's hard to deny that there was more than enough good in the season to ensure that we're definitely excited to see where things go next. The finale did a great job of setting up some plot threads for the next run that we're eager to have explored and explained in further depth. From new material drawn from the comic books to flaws we wish to be fixed, here are 10 things we want to see in Supergirl's third outing. If you have something else you want to happen in season 3 that we failed to mention, make sure to fly over to the comments section and let us know. 10) Batman Begins? We'll admit that this is unlikely to happen but, come on, how amazing would it be for Batman to turn up on Supergirl? If we block our ears to the many reasons that the Dark Knight could never appear in the Arrowverse (the character is tied up in the DCEU, Gotham has the rights to the Bat-mythos, etc.), it almost seems like the show is setting him up for an introduction next year. Season 2 featured a few very clear references to Batman, with the premiere including the first ever namecheck of the Caped Crusader's home city. Elsewhere in the season, Kara mentions that Superman has a vigilante ally with lots of gadgets and issues. Later still, Jimmy likens his alter ego of Guardian to "Clark's friend," to which Winn imitates bat ears. So, how about doing something with these references next year? If not Batman, then how about Batwoman? The character has never graced our screens before and her comic book girlfriend Maggie Sawyer is already part of the show's cast. 9) More DC Legends In The Cast A great joy of Supergirl's past two seasons has been its tendency to cast actors who have a previous history with DC comics adaptations in new roles. There are few things the fans love more than when superhero TV shows and movies pay homage to what's come before and this is one of the best ways to do it. For instance, season 1 brought on board the likes of Helen Slater (star of 1984's Supergirl movie), Dean Cain (Superman in Lois & Clark) and Laura Vandervoort (Kara in Smallville). Season 2, meanwhile, featured Lynda Carter (Wonder Woman herself) and Teri Hatcher (Dean Cain's co-star in Lois & Clark). So, who else could turn up in season 3? Smallville star Tom Welling would be one who springs to mind first, seeing as The CW's previous Kryptonian-themed show continues to be such an influence on Supergirl. Wouldn't it be fun if they got the former Superman to play Batman? Sure, it's unlikely, but we can dream. 8) Superman Returns (Again) Fans went wild when it was announced that, after a year of fairly contrived explanations for his absence, Kara's cousin Superman would finally be appearing on the show. His subsequent debut in season 2's opening two-parter made the episodes some of the highlights of the entire series as Tyler Hoechlin's Man of Steel was a delight to see. Not to mention that it was a novelty to have an on-screen Superman who wasn't afraid to smile again. Sadly, that was all we got from the Big Blue Boy Scout until the final moments of the penultimate episode of the season. And even then, he was under the thrall of evil Queen Rhea, so it wasn't even actual Superman. In the finale, the Man of Steel then took a backseat as Kara stepped up to be "champion of Earth." That was probably the right move for the show - it is called Supergirl, after all - but we still want more from the character. Perhaps next year they could feature Hoechlin in a multi-episode mini-arc, maybe somewhere in the middle of the season so as to give it a boost. Or maybe bring back Mark Gibbon as General Zod and have both Superman and Supergirl face off against the Kryptonian criminal. 7) An Expanded Role For Martian Manhunter Likewise, another classic DC hero we want to see more of is Kara's boss at the DEO; Hank Henshaw AKA J'onn J'onzz AKA Martian Manhunter. As the movies aren't doing anything with him at the moment, the character could be a great asset to the show. He's super-powerful, has a tragic past and has a wonderful father-daughter relationship with the Danvers sisters. And yet, Supergirl doesn't seem to know how to handle him. This is a great shame, as David Harewood is always reliable in the part and seems to be able to handle whatever's thrown at him. If the show is worried about making him too powerful, which is why he so rarely helps out in the field, why not have Martian lose some of his powers? It might be a bit of a copout, but it would be worth it to have more from the character. While they're at it, it would be nice if they could actually do something with the real Hank Henshaw alias Cyborg Superman, as well. The character is a formidable opponent on the page but is little more than a dumb henchman for Cadmus on Supergirl. At least let David Harewood wear a version of the super suit to make sense of his name. 6) Write Out James Olsen Like Martian Manhunter, James Olsen is another regular character who's been underused. He's suffered to a far greater extent, however. The problems started at the beginning of the season when Kara and James' romance, which we had been built up throughout season 1, was artificially broken up. After that, despite being made head of CatCo, James struggled to find a place in the show. Even after becoming a vigilante in his own right - namely, Guardian - the character remained a spare part. Unlike J'onn J'onzz, though, the best thing that the show can do with James Olsen is not to feature him more in season 3 but to cut him out altogether. With his status as the leading man of the show taken over by Mon-El, there's simply no role for James to fill. And it's not like National City will miss Guardian all that much, especially not when it has Supergirl, Mon-El and Martian Manhunter around to protect it. It's no fault of Mehcad Brooks, of course, who's given the role his best shot. It's just that this radically-different version of the classic comic book character has run its course. 5) Give Us Lex Luthor As well as bringing in Superman, Supergirl season 2 also introduced the family of his greatest nemesis, Lex Luthor. Lex's adoptive sister Lena appeared as the new CEO of L-Corp and bonded with Kara as she tried to distance herself from her family's wicked ways. Her mother, Lilian Luthor, was then revealed to be the alien-hating leader of Cadmus. Seeing as both Luthor women will stick around for season 3, it's now time to introduce Lex into the mix. In the show, his absence is explained away by him being in jail. But every Superman fan knows that the Greatest Criminal Mind Of Our Time does not stay behind bars for long. It would make for an awesome Lena-focused arc next season if her older brother got himself out of prison and tried to take back control of his company. Just like it did with Tyler Hoechlin's Superman, the show could give us a more traditional version of Lex. This is something a lot of us would like to see, especially to wash away the taste of Jesse Eisenberg's odd take on the character in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. 4) Give Mon-El A Superhero Suit Supergirl fans seem split over Mon-El. While some are big fans of Chris Wood's charismatic and funny performance in the role and his natural chemistry with Melissa Benoist, others have felt that the dude-bro Daxamite hogged too much screentime this season and needs to go. Eschewing that argument for a moment, one thing that does need to happen with the character is for him to actually don a proper superhero suit. Throughout season 2, Mon-El wore what must be the laziest costume in the whole of the Arrowverse: just a standard DEO black uniform with some orange-tinted glasses thrown on. It's not like they don't have the comic books to turn to for inspiration, either. Mon-El has been around on the page since his creation in 1961. In the comics, he wears a red and blue outfit whose colour scheme and cape meshes with that of Superman. He also has a superhero codename: Valor. Despite Kara and Mon's tragic separation at the end of the season, the character will surely not stay away from Earth for long. When he returns, let's hope he gets some new togs. 3) Meet The Legion Of Super-Heroes Since season 2 of the show, Supergirl has teased the existence of the Legion of Super-Heroes in its universe. Superman's Legion Flight Ring has been spotted in the Fortress of Solitude on several occasions, for one, and with season 3, we hope that the team will finally be introduced in the flesh. For those not in the know, the Legion are a group of heroes from the far future who are usually presented as being a major part of Clark Kent's teenage life, as they come back in time to befriend the Boy of Steel. Both Supergirl and Mon-El are also members of the Legion in the comics. We could be wrong, but the show might have already set-up a way for them to appear. In the season finale, Mon-El is seen being sucked into a wormhole. This could easily fling him into the far future, where he could ally himself with the Legion and then find his way back to the 21st century - with his new superhero friends in tow, of course. 2) Stronger Villains One issue that Supergirl has rarely been able to fix is its tendency to produce weak, underdeveloped villains. Having underwhelming freaks-of-the-week is not a problem that's unique to this show, so we'll let that one pass, but its big bads haven't been up the level of the likes of The Flash and Arrow. Back in season 1, General Non was a bargain-bin alien warlord and his ally Indigo was a cheap-looking ripoff of Mystique from the X-Men franchise. There was Kara's aunt Astra as well, who could have been a layered villain... if she wasn't killed off in episode 13. For season 2, things didn't improve much, with Cadmus never really pulling their weight. They were so lacking that the organization was shunted off big bad duties by the end of the season when Daxamite Queen Rhea came along to threaten Earth - in pretty much the same way Non had done in season 1. Season 2's closing moments set up an intriguing new villain for the next season, though: the Kryptonian monstrosity known as Reign. Giving Supergirl essentially her own version of Doomsday could be interesting and we hope that the show will finally deliver an engaging major villain next time around. 1) Put Kara Back At the Centre of the Show The thing we most want to see in Supergirl season 3, above everything else in this list, is for Kara to be put back at the centre of her own show. As the series expanded in its sophomore year, the clear central character journey that Kara embarked upon throughout season 1 was lost. Though many episodes revolved around Supergirl learning some small lesson, it was hard to tell what her overarching story for the year was. Certainly, the biggest character development this season was Mon-El, who Kara aided in growing from a privileged prince into a selfless hero. That was the key to the issue, though. Kara was an adjunct to Mon-El's development, instead of him being an adjunct to her own. If you swap the genders, it's like Iris West stealing the spotlight away from Barry Allen over on The Flash. It shouldn't happen. We love Supergirl because it's sadly still one of the few places we can go to watch a female superhero's adventures. If said female superhero isn't even the star of her own show though, then you know something needs fixing. Let's hope the writers realize this and sort it out for season 3.
