7) Sportsmaster
Sportsmaster is exactly the kind of lesser-known DC supervillain that the Arrowverse thrives on introducing in order to keep coming up with villains-of-the-week for the heroes to face. The character is a prominent figure in the comics, dating back all the way to 1947, and has a memorable gimmick that would easily work in a grounded show like Arrow.Â
There’ve been a couple of Sportsmaster over the years – namely, Crusher Crock and Victor Gover – but they both have the same MO: they were former sports stars who turned to a life of crime, using their athleticism and other sports skills to succeed.
Like Cheshire, Sportsmaster will also be familiar to TV viewers from his recurring role on Young Justice, where it was revealed – as per the comics – that he’s the father of Artemis. Not that Arrow has to bother with this connection, however, if it’s done with Artemis’ storyline.
Either way, Sportsmaster deserves some sort of appearance in the show, even as a one-and-done antagonist.
6) Onomatopoeia
Though he isn’t nearly as major a villain as most of the rest of this list, Green Arrow enemy Onomatopoeia would be a fascinating one to see adapted for the TV screen. It might be a challenge to make him work, but if done right it could make for a very memorable villain-of-the-week.
Just as the name suggests, Onomatopoeia is a serial killer who likes to repeat the sounds that his various methods of killings make. For instance, if he blew someone up he would follow it up by saying: ‘BOOM.’ If he shot someone, he would say ‘BLAM’ and so on. Created by Kevin Smith, the character was a clever play on the use of sound effects in comic books.
Back in Arrow season 1, the villain Mr. Blank was originally intended to be Onomatopoeia before they decided the character wouldn’t work in live-action. Since then, Smith – who’s directed episodes of The Flash and Supergirl – has spoken about how he would love to bring his creation to Arrow and has a really cool idea about how to do it. Let’s hope they take him up on the offer.
