Arrow Season 8 Will Have A Very Unexpected Ending

Arrow reaches its end with its eighth season this year, and it looks like we already know what fate has in store for Oliver Queen. Back in "Elseworlds", it appeared that the Emerald Archer had made a deal with the Monitor to save the lives of the Flash and Supergirl in exchange for his own. Sure enough, the Arrow season 7 finale confirmed it - the Green Arrow is going to die in the incoming Crisis on Infinite Earths.

But this doesn’t mean that there won’t be some twists in the tale. Today at the TCAs, EP Marc Guggenheim spoke a little about how the show will actually wrap up in an unexpected way. Obviously, he can’t say too much right now, but he did reveal that people were thinking of things in a “very binary way. ‘It has to be X or Y.’ I think we have Z planned.”

Star Stephen Amell has also previously teased that Arrow might actually deliver a happy ending, as unlikely as that may sound given the scheduled death of his character. I’d suggest that maybe Amell is hinting that Ollie will actually change destiny again and escape his supposed fate in “Crisis,” but that might be more of that “X or Y” thinking Guggenheim was warning us about.

Maybe there’s a way that the hero can die but the show still ends happily. Beats me what that is, but maybe this is the “Z” method the writers room has planned. In any case, it sounds like “unexpected” is the watchword for all of Arrow season 8.

We still don’t know exactly what shape it’ll take, but it seems like Oliver will be aiding the Monitor in tackling the pre-effects of the multiversal crisis. This appears to lead to the return of some old faces, like Tommy Merlyn (Colin Donnell), Adrian Chase (Josh Segarra) and Moira Queen (Susanna Thompson). And it all gets underway when Arrow season 8 kicks off on The CW on October 15th.
