DC TV Roundup: A New Black Canary Debuts, Jerome Steals The Show

While Marvel and DC battle to see who wins at the box office, it’s virtually inarguable that it's the latter who dominates the small screen. Now having taken over four nights of the week when it comes to prime time programming, serialized superhero storytelling has swiftly become a cornerstone in the lives of many a geek these days.

Many will likely agree in saying that this season of Arrow has been firing on all cylinders for the most part, myself included. In fact, this may be the DC show I’m enjoying most right now and I’m hoping the producers don’t derail the train because, as the last two seasons evidenced, they make bizarre narrative choices and generally don’t do too well once getting over the midseason hump. Needless to say, I’m really rooting for them because I have a great attachment to this show.

After being left baffled by the decision to not make Earth-2 Laurel the new Black Canary last week, we were introduced to Tina Boland, a metahuman former detective with a Canary Cry of her own. Viewers were left no choice but to approach this development with cautious optimism and see how it played out.

Thankfully, it was revealed near the end of “Second Chances” that Tina Boland was just a cover name and her true identity is, in fact, Dinah Drake, who comic book readers may remember as the Golden Age Black Canary’s secret identity. So far, it looks like she’ll be a good fit and is showing up as soon as next week’s episode. If my gut is right, she’ll be confirmed as a series regular for season 6.
