DC TV Roundup: Now That’s What I Call Music, Arrowverse Edition

While Marvel and DC battle to see who wins at the box office, it’s virtually inarguable that it's the latter who dominates the small screen. Now having taken over four nights of the week when it comes to prime time programming, serialized superhero storytelling has swiftly become a cornerstone in the lives of many a geek these days. And who could blame any of us? Twenty-some episodes afford more character development and make room for introductions of heroes and villains that you would never be able to see in a two-hour movie. Multiply those possibilities due to a handful of these shows now existing and we’re being treated to a Golden Age of Superhero TV that we hope doesn’t end any time soon. Given that, we've established this column with the intent to recap the most memorable moments in DC TV each week, analyzing all the unforgettable developments to occur on Gotham, Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, provided a new episode airs. It’s the crossover you’ve been waiting to see, delivered under the premise nobody asked for! This week on The Flash, the musical crossover with Supergirl finally arrived, making for what was easily my least favorite episode of the entire series. Seriously, just because the Arrowverse is populated with Glee alumni doesn’t mean we need to Glee-ify it. Sure, there are probably superhero fans who enjoy jaunty song and dance routines, but I’m guessing those less inclined to Grease it up are probably in the majority here. Don’t mistake me for being somebody who’s all doom and gloom because I’m not (although I did listen to a Dimmu Borgir album earlier in the day). It’s just that this offering lacked the wit of what was seen several years ago when the Music Meister appeared on Batman: The Brave and the Bold. I promise that if you check out that episode, you’ll probably agree that it was far superior. As it turns out, Barry and Kara’s comatose exploits were nothing more than an exercise in learning the power of love. My, wouldn’t Huey Lewis be proud. Furthermore, it was somewhat hinted that this version of the Music Meister was a being similar to that of Mxyzptlk, and I got the impression we haven’t seen the last of him. But now that the producers have gotten this out of their system, I hope they never do it again. 3) Baby, When I Tell You The Boy Has Got His Own Money, I Mean The Boy Has Got His Own Money! Saying this week’s episode of Supergirl was important to watch is probably an understatement, for we finally learned the truth behind Mon-El. As it turns out, he’s the prince of Daxam, with Lar Gand and Rhea being his parents. And, as you could imagine, Kara was none too pleased to learn of this. Aside from finding out how he survived Daxam's destruction, “Star-Crossed” also saw Earth-38’s power couple break up. Well, at least for a period of 24 hours because it sure as hell looked like they were back together at the end of The Flash. On that note, I’m glad it was only the final minutes of this episode that served as prologue to the crossover, need I rehash everything I said on the previous page. At least we have Kevin Smith returning as director next week to act as a palette cleanser. 2) Be The Broken Or The Breaker While I have mixed feelings when it comes to this week’s episode of Arrow, I can’t deny how intense it was or keep it from placing high on this list. In the present, Oliver was brutally tortured by Prometheus, who attempted to break our hero physically and mentally. And for the most part, it looked like he succeeded thanks to an assist from Artemis. In the end, it appeared Team Arrow would be disbanded, but we know that can’t last for too long (come on, the show’s coming back for a sixth season!). Interestingly enough, the wealth of this episode took place in the past, further detailing Oliver’s history with the Bratva. It's also where I became indifferent to the content. Okay, we know Oliver had more severe methods in the early days, but who the hell thought it was a good idea to have a superhero skin a guy? Is Eli Roth showrunner now? Why don’t ideas like this get shot down when you have a writers room populated by sober adults? Still, an episode structured like this wasn’t a bad thing. With the season finale approaching, we do need to find out how Oliver got back on the island before long. 1) Allow Me To Break The Ice It took what felt like an eternity, but we finally witnessed the true return of Captain Cold on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. You see, despite Wentworth Miller having signed a deal that made him a series regular across the entire Arrowverse, he’d only appeared in hallucinations and flashbacks on various shows this season up until now. Thankfully, the Legion of Doom changed the game by plucking him from the timeline just before he was originally recruited by Rip Hunter. Diabolical! As such, the bad guys were able to get Heat Wave to do an eleventh hour heel turn, but I doubt that will last for very long. Still, they were able to rewrite reality by using the Spear of Destiny, effectively making next week’s offering a can’t miss situation.
