The 8 Best Multi-Doctor Stories Of Doctor Who

Happy birthday, Doctor Who! Today marks the sci-fi behemoth's 55th birthday. From its humble beginnings as a Saturday evening children's educational series, Doctor Who has continually reinvented itself over the past half a century in order to keep viewers coming back for more - its greatest weapon is the concept of regeneration, which allows for the Doctor to be played by a fresh actor (or actress) every few years.

Now, let’s get stuck into the good stuff.

For no other reason than nostalgia and the availability of the actors, 1985’s “The Two Doctors” saw Colin Baker’s Sixth Doctor team up with Patrick Troughton’s Second Doctor, alongside his companion Jamie (Frazer Hines) in an adventure featuring classic monsters the Sontarans filmed in sunny Seville, Spain.

By this time, fans were used to multi-Doctor stories not having the tightest of storylines – with the fun coming from watching the various Doctors interact, who cares if the plot isn’t so good? – but “The Two Doctors” definitely suffers from a narrative that’s lacking in focus. On the one hand, you have the Sontarans’ plot to steal the Time Lords’ secret of time travel. On the other, there’s the cannibalistic Androgums, and for one alarming episode of the 3 parter, the Second Doctor temporarily gets transformed into one.

There’s much fun to be had from seeing the impish, mischievous Second Doctor interact with the wholly different Sixth Doctor, who’s loud and arrogant, but there’s just too much strong competition for “The Two Doctors” to come any higher on this list.
