One of the very few Netflix fantasy shows to end on its own terms wraps shooting on the final season

Bowing out with a bow tied around its story for a change.

It’s easy to get swept up in the fury that erupts all too regularly when a popular fantasy series is canceled by Netflix, so much so that it’s not difficult to forget that some of them are afforded the opportunity to end on their own terms. While there aren’t many, The Umbrella Academy is one of the select few, with the end edging ever closer.

When the fourth season of the hit comic book adaptation was announced, it was also confirmed to be the last, a fate that was also bestowed upon Sweet Tooth. The streaming service may have axed upwards of two dozen otherworldly originals since the beginning of 2020, but there are those who get a stay of execution and the chance to bring their stories to a close.

It’s almost time to bid farewell to the Hargreeves family for good, then, with principal photography on the last run of episodes officially drawing to a close yesterday. There’s no word on when we can expect a release date, but it may not be until 2024, which continues another infuriating Netflix trend of forcing subscribers to wait years between seasons.

One positive is that everyone is going to know heading in that there’s no more Umbrella Academy to come, which should at least stem the tide of skepticism that greets many in-house exclusives that arrive to much fanfare and absolutely no guarantee they’re even going to exist beyond the end of the finale.

It’s a small mercy, but with fantastical Netflix favorites becoming increasingly few and far between in regards to multi-season arcs, it’s best to take what we can get and enjoy it for what it is.
