Orphan Black’s Most Exciting Moments…So Far

Clones and clones and clones! Oh my! BBC America’s Orphan Black has only aired two seasons (with a 10-episode third season on its way in spring 2015), but the progressive sci-fi drama has managed to broadcast some of the best moments on the small screen. I think we can thank Tatiana Maslany for that, which brings the question: why hasn’t she been nominated for an Emmy? As much as I’d like to, I’m not here to discuss Maslany’s continuous snubs for her phenomenal acting (how many roles does she play?!). However, that’s a question and a feature for another day. Rather, I’m here to focus on just a few of the best moments from both seasons of Orphan Black. With so many fantastic ones, it’s hard to narrow down some of the top scenes. From Helena’s eating habits to soccer mom Alison singing Meredith Brooks’ “Bitch” in her van to Sarah getting it on with Paul to keep her cover (can you blame the girl?) to Cosima’s badass biological ways to babysitter Felix, Orphan Black knows how to produce some of the most intoxicating, hilarious, beautiful and intense scenes on TV today. With that said, here are just a few of the best moments (10, to be exact) from Orphan Black, so far. 1) At First Glance You can’t have a series and a clone club without clones, so how can’t the “meeting” of Sarah and Beth not be included in this list? This brief moment is what kickstarted the entire series and clone conspiracy. While standing on the platform, Sarah spotted Beth. Not only was she overwhelmed with spotting her look-a-like, but also by witnessing Beth’s suicide. From that moment, Sarah’s life changed, in multiple ways. Sarah’s “holy shit” expression quickly turned into an opportunity for Sarah to steal an identity, get some money and start living a life with her daughter. Like the quick pace of the show, the tables turned so fast on Sarah that she immediately got sucked into a world she didn’t even know existed. The craziness began, and it’s the type of craziness that I can’t get enough of. 2) Three's Definitely Not A Crowd As the saying goes, three’s a crowd, but that’s not the case when it comes to Sarah, Alison and Cosima. She might’ve been taken aback when seeing Beth, but Sarah’s first meeting with Alison and Cosima is one for the books. Coming face to face with TWO other women who look just like you? Talk about another life-changing moment. Not only did we get a feel for the feisty soccer mom Alison, who’s also a lovable control freak/closeted alcoholic, but we also met Cosima, the biology genius rocking dreads, who eventually cracked the code and learned they’re patented. In addition to Sarah, this is the scene where viewers became attached to two more clones that make up the Orphan Black world. Oh, and, finally, Sarah learned the truth: she’s a clone! It’s still amazing to me how each of these characters feel as if they’re played by different actresses. Maslany pure genius. 3) Hello, Seestra She might be crazy. She might love to eat food in a disgusting way (which I adore). She might be a psychopathic killer. However, Helena has a good heart and how can’t you love watching Maslany portray a Ukrainian with frizzy blonde hair? From the moment Sarah met Helena (hello, seestra), this duo had a connection, and it goes far beyond cloning. That connection? They’re twins! When Sarah learned Helena is actually her twin, I got chills. Their scenes have so much charm and emotion that it only makes sense that they’re related. Sarah grew up as a foster child with one fantastic foster brother, aka Felix, but having a biological sister solidifies who Sarah is even more. She might’ve tried to kill her, and she surely doesn’t agree with everything Helena does, but her seestra is just one more person for her to fight for. Now that’s sibling love. 4) Alison’s Craft Room Of Terror It’s hard to choose a favorite clone, but for some reason I have a soft spot for Alison (and her screwed up relationship with Donnie). In addition to this husband and wife burying Dr. Leekie in their garage (and having intense sex after the fact), they also know how to deliver a torture scene....in Alison’s craft room. Forget using the ribbons, bows, wrapping paper and every other item from Jo-Ann Fabric that Alison has in that room for actual crafting, because she uses them for torture. Alison was sure Donnie was her monitor, so why not tie him up and burn him with a hot glue gun to get answers. Did it work? No, but let’s give her a huge round of applause for creativity. In a way, her craft room of terror is just another way to express her artistic abilities. Also, you have to admit that Donnie did a damn good job of not admitting to actually being her monitor. 5) Tony And Felix Sitting In A Tree You know Maslany is pure talent when she can pull off a transgender clone named Tony (formerly Antoinette). A transgender clone? Seriously, what can’t she do? This was quite an unexpected Season 2 moment, and one that was embraced with open arms by many. As much as I enjoyed seeing Maslany walking and talking like a dude, I enjoyed Tony’s time with Felix even more. Talk about an attraction and sexual chemistry. Sadly, Tony only appeared for a short amount of time in one episode (hopefully we’ll see his return next season), but that didn’t stop Tony from k-i-s-s-i-n-g Felix. He might be the spitting image of his sister Sarah, but Felix surely liked that kiss. Do you think he thought of Sarah at all? Whatever was running through his mind, I need more Tony and more Felix and Tony. Is it too early to come up with a shipping name? 6) Helena Gets Towed In all honesty, I could make every best moment on this list about Helena (eating), but I won’t. That doesn’t mean I can’t make two about her. In addition to the one above, here’s another top Helena scene. Admittedly, I selected this one because, well, Patrick J. Adams. If Patrick J. Adams (yes, I always use his full name) is in a show (Ghost Whisperer. NCIS. Friday Night Lights. Duh, Suits is a must-watch), I’m there. On Orphan Black, he played Jesse, the tow truck driver. By chance, he encounters Helena at a bar and the two hit it off. They might have shared lots of libations, arm wrestled and even danced (if you thought Helena could dance with a tail, she even knows how to dance with a man), but the one thing they shared that sent fans screaming was a kiss. Yes, Helena and Jesse shared a deep smooch. I guess you could say Helena got towed. Unfortunately, their passion was interrupted by idiotic bar patrons. No worries, Helena took care of it - with billiards equipment and her hands. 7) Male Clones! If you were excited about the idea of female clones, then what about male clones? At the end of season two, we learned about Project Castor, aka the male clone project. Just who is the male clone? It’s religious extremist and Proletheans member Mark. As far as we know, there are three male clones: Mark, the Castor clone in uniform and Scarface, the man Sarah came face to face with (in addition to another one of her own clones, but the younger version) courtesy of Dr. Marian Bowles. FYI, I did not name the clone Scarface - the creators dubbed him this. What can we expect from both male and female clones? The possibilities are endless, which makes fans even more thrilled for next season. 8) I Spy A Pencil In Rachel’s Eye Seriously, when is this b**** officially going down? Yes, Helena is a highly disturbed woman, but what about Rachel? I get that she has A LOT of issues, but when you mess with my clones, I don’t like you. It was great seeing Sarah tackling Rachel in Dr. Leekie’s office, but it was an even greater moment when Cosima and Scott rigged that fire extinguisher missile (obviously, they learned a lot from MacGyver) for Sarah to use against Rachel. Bam! Before she realized it, Rachel had a pencil jammed in her eye. Is Rachel alive? Will we see her with an eye patch next season? Whatever happens, let’s give a huge thanks to Cosima and Scott for putting out that fire. 9) It’s Raining Men Don’t get me wrong, I love that this show heavily features strong, leading women, but I can’t not include the male specimen of Orphan Black. First up we have Paul. My favorite moment? His abs. Next we have Cal. My favorite moment? Those locks and his protective nature. Then we have Art. My favorite moment? Any scene with Helena. Next is Vic. My favorite moment? When Vic is covered in glitter and taken down by Alison, Felix and Sarah. Then there is Scott. My favorite moment? His loyalty to Cosima. I can’t forget good old Donnie, either. My favorite moment? When he killed Dr. Leekie, and not because he killed a man. How can you forget that look on his face after the gun accidentally went off? To make it even better, he and Alison bonded over killing people (she, of course, let Aynsley get strangled to death by the garbage disposal). True love, folks. Lastly, there is Felix. My favorite moment? I love everything about him. How can’t you? 10) Ain’t No Party Like A Clone Club Dance Party Last, but definitely not least, we have that magnificent dance party showcased in the second season finale. What better way to end a season than with our favorite clones plus Felix dancing like there’s no tomorrow. To watch Sarah, Alison, Cosima and Helena all in one room (too bad Tony wasn’t there, because, as we saw previously, he can headbang with the best of them), is a rare treat that the Orphan Black audience gets to indulge in. As I said, these are only a few of the best moments from the first two seasons of this critically acclaimed show.
