Star Trek: Discovery is about to return to CBS All Access for its sophomore run and we now have these awesome character posters to feast on which reintroduce us to the intrepid crew of the U.S.S. Discovery and their allies, new and old.
The posters take the approach of pairing up the various cast members. For instance, one unites Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) with her adoptive brother Spock (Ethan Peck), who’ll be joining the show in the new season after being heavily referenced last year. Another features Commander Saru (Doug Jones) and Ensign Sylvia Tilly (May Wiseman).
Lieutenant commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp), meanwhile, is then put with Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz), his boyfriend who was killed back in season 1. And last but not least, Anson Mount’s Captain Pike – another iconic Trek character new to Discovery in season 2 – gets a poster with Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh), the former Mirrorverse empress who’s now an operative for Section 31.
The posters all feature the tagline “Exploration is logical,” which neatly captures the two big hooks of this season. In contrast to the darker first run, Discovery season 2 is being marketed as much more of a fun ride that’ll focus on the adventure and, yes, the exploration. Meanwhile, “logical” is obviously a reference to Spock, with Peck’s portrayal being only the third depiction of the Vulcan officer after Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto.
Also, in the tail of the Discovery on the posters, note the presence of some red bursts. These refer to the main thrust of the plot this season, as the crew have to investigate and discover the cause behind these strange bursts that are appearing across space, as well as an enigmatic figure that Spock has witnessed, known only as the Red Angel. It’s a mystery that’s spawned lots of intriguing theories, including the mind-blowing idea that it could allow the series to tie into the Kelvin timeline, and we’ll find out how it all ties together when Star Trek: Discovery season 2 blasts off on January 17th.
