The promo gives us our best look yet at Ethan Peck as the bearded Spock, as well as more from Anson Mount’s Captain Pike and Michelle Yeoh as Philipa Georgiou. Most importantly, it serves up some additional information on the intriguing mystery of the “red angel” that’ll kick off the story and an incoming apocalyptic threat.

As we’ve been told before, Spock will team up with the Discovery crew during his quest to uncover the truth behind numerous red cosmic bursts in space and the enigmatic humanoid figure who follows them. The trailer sees the Vulcan explain that the so-called red angel has given him an apocalyptic vision: “someone – or something – is going to end all sentient life in the galaxy.” It sounds like the crew will definitely have their work cut out for them in season 2.

At least they have Christopher Pike as their new captain, though. Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays protagonist Lieutenant Michael Burnham, has said that the presence of the familiar Starfleet officer will help the crew rebuild their trust and camaraderie after that shocking twist about their previous captain Jason Isaacs’ Gabriel Lorca last season.

Meanwhile, showrunner Alex Kurtzman has promised that season 2 will bridge the gap between Spock’s characterization in the pilot for The Original Series and the more alien logician we all know and love. What’s more, a couple of species from Star Trek past will also put in appearances in the new run.

And it all goes down in Star Trek: Discovery‘s 14-episode second season, which blasts onto CBS All Access on January 17th.
