In contrast to the past two seasons, which have been set around Halloween, season 3 will begin with the characters enjoying the summer of 1985. The trailer for the new run promises that Eleven and her friends may finally get some time to just be normal kids. But as carefree as things look to be at the beginning of the season, don’t expect the peace and quiet to last for too long, as the Mind Flayer – the monstrous ruler of the Upside Down – is still out there waiting to take over our world.

Sheriff Hopper himself, David Harbour, recently said that season 3 will be “emotional” and “unexpected,” with the star also previously teasing that his character and Winona Ryder’s Joyce Byers might finally become an item. Meanwhile, fans needn’t worry about Steve Harrington (Joe Keery), as we’ve been assured there’ll be more of his unlikely friendship with Gaten Matarazzo’s Dustin to come. Plus, a first-look clip revealed that Billy (Dacre Montgomery) will continue flirting with Will and Nancy’s mother Karen (Cara Buono).

As well as all your old favorites, joining Stranger Things in season 3 are Jake Busey as Bruce, Cary Elwes as Mayor Kline and Maya Thurman-Hawke as Robin, a girl who promos have revealed works with Steve at the ice cream counter in the newly-built Starcourt Mall. As the title of the season 3 finale is “The Battle of Starcourt” though, expect this to get invaded by other-wordly evil across the episodes.
