The 6 Most Shocking Moments From The Walking Dead Universe

To have the true Walking Dead experience, one needs to experience ALL of The Walking Dead. This means that you not only have to watch the show, but you must also play the Telltale game and read the stellar comic book series. Personally, I think the comic book is the best of the three. It has a real sense of depravity that they just can't seem to pull off on TV. In the same breath, anyone who has played through the Telltale game can tell you that it is a bit more heart wrenching than the show, because the game puts you INTO those scenarios, as oppose to the show, which just makes you witness to them. So, like I said, you really need to experience this world in all three mediums to understand it. This is not a world overtaken by zombies. This is a world where the humans have to surpass the zombies as the monsters. This is a world that is accentuated by the constant threat of death. The worst part being, you have NO idea where this death is going to come from. Is this death going to be because you got bitten by a walker? Or is this death going to be because you crossed paths with some cannibal humans who have lost any thread of humanity left in them? Hell, even worse, will you just finally get broken by this world and die at your own hand? These are all fair questions to ask, and as someone who knows this Walking Dead world all too well, I can tell you, the answer depends on the person. So, being The Walking Dead specialist I am (+5 points for me sounding like a douche there), I figured I would comb that universe and pick the six most shocking moments, and put them all in a nice, spoiler-filled list for you. See what I did there? I warned you about the spoilers. So even if you click even one page in, you have NO RIGHT to bitch in the comments. You've been warned. 1) The Walking Dead Comic: The Death of the Twins You know, I think we have the twins on the show now too, I just don't think they are twins anymore. I won't say anything more than that, but I would be lying if I were to tell you not to expect this storyline to come to light on the show sometime soon. This moment in the comics was the MOST scene in establishing that the humans these people surround themselves with are far worse than the walkers. Wait, I am getting ahead of myself. In the comic storyline, when they found the jail, life seemed good. It seemed like, for the first time, that these people were catching a break. Well, they weren't. In the comics, Herschel also happens to have two, very young twin daughters. One day they decided to run off and check out the prison while all the adults are settling in. Flash forward and we find them on the floor of the prison barber shop. Both of their heads severed clean off. Keep in mind, it wasn't so much the death that did it to us. Yes, they are young girls, and the very idea is nauseating, but the kicker here is that their heads were CUT OFF. They were not bitten or eaten. They were CUT. 2) The Walking Dead Show and Comic: Carl Gets Shot Man, that was a killer season two premiere, eh? Carl was also shot in the comic book too and both moments were definitely shocking. The comic was obviously more visceral, but seeing him get shot while petting that deer on the show was pretty shocking to many of us, too. Why? Well, there are a few good reasons for that. One, you really NEVER see kids get hurt in horror. Even though that taboo has changed a lot in the last five years (gee, thanks Game of Thrones) it is still, and always will be, jarring to see a child get hurt. So to see a main character that's child get so brutally hurt was a real eye opener (see what I did there) for a lot of Walking Dead fans. Now, Carl healed up rather quickly on the show and seemingly without any major problems, and season two went on to suck ass. So really, Carl getting shot was just kind of a trick to get us to make it through that shitty season, but we made it, didn't we? So I guess it worked. 3) The Walking Dead Game: Killing Duck How the hell did Telltale do this? How did they make a game about an already amazing franchise, and somehow make it even better? I will tell you how. They took those breathtaking and soul breaking moments and decisions from the show and comic, and placed US in control of them. It is one thing to see a scene where the survivors have to figure out who to kill and who to let live, but when it is YOU making the decisions, it REALLY hammers it home. While The Walking Dead game was FULL of these moments, I felt there was none quite like the moment you had to kill your friend's son, Duck. The worst part is, you may not have made that decision when you played, but I did. That is how I promised myself to play the game. To be as true to the real life decisions I would have made were I really in that situation, and if I was in a situation with a friend whose son was about to turn, I wouldn't make him go through the act of killing him. That is too much. But in the same breath, there I am, about to shoot a little kid in his head, and I am thinking: Man, this is what it would REALLY be like to have to survive in a zombie apocalypse. I drew the gun, and regretfully, shot the kid in the head. Outside of the entirety of Shadow of the Colossus, very few moments in gaming have had as big an impact on me as that scene did. It also drives home that fact that in a zombie apocalypse, anything goes. There is no safety anymore. There is no longevity anymore. There is no hope anymore. That is just what the stellar Telltale games drives home in that single moment. A bleak life filled with loss and sadness. 4) The Walking Dead Comic: Complete Michonne and Governor Story Arc You think The Governor from The Walking Dead show was bad? That dude was a fucking schoolyard bully compared to the Danny Trejo inspired Governor from the comic book. While there was a bunch of weird shit going on with him (like making out with his toothless niece Penny), there is no shocking moment of depravity than can even compare to what he forced Michonne to endure at his hands, and the revenge she took on him as a result. It started with The Governor holding Michonne hostage. While we don't know the exact details (thank god), we do know he raped her and beat her to near-death, over and over again for a long, extended period of time. Some of the things he says and does to her are the kinds of things you wouldn't wish on an enemy, so to have it happen to a character we had truly grown to care about was hard to take. BUT, this is Michonne, so you know the story doesn't end there. It ends with Michonne escaping, and then coming back and exacting a revenge on the Governor quite unlike anything you had ever seen in a comic book before. She nails his penis to a board, pulls off his fingernails with pliers, and then she sticks a spoon up his asshole, twists it a bit, pulls it out, and takes out his one good eye with that same spoon. I think I just threw up a little in my mouth. That, my friends, was the REAL Michonne and Governor storyline. All that Andrea bullshit from the show can go to Hell. 5) The Walking Dead Show and Comic: Lori's Death I admit it, I liked how they handled Lori's death on the show. I thought having Carl having to put her down after she gave birth was really tough and emotional, and worked really well. I also found it funny how all the world flipped out and was so shocked and upset by it, even though everyone claimed it was all they wanted from the get-go because her character was such a pain in the ass. I also think Rick's reaction on the show was gut-wrenching, which made it such a powerful moment. But do you know how and when she died in the comic? She died when the Governor invaded the prison for revenge, right after she gave birth. She was shot while carrying her newborn in her arms. Lori and the newborn baby died together, as a result of the Governor. I remember seeing that frame of her getting shot carrying the baby and really feeling sick. The Walking Dead show is like a fucking Disney cartoon compared to the comic book, and I think most people seem to lose sight of that. 6) The Walking Dead Comic: Glen Meets The Barbed-Wire Baseball Bat If you think that the Governor was an awful, irredeemable bad guy, just wait until you meet Negan. Fucking Negan. Psychotic head of a biker gang who sort of runs the roads in the apocalypse. I cannot recall a character who has elicited such a powerful reaction from me. While the Governor was an awful man, Negan is something else. A mindless psycho. You may think Governor raping Michonne is awful, and it is, but when Negan tells Rick he will have his boys run a train on Carl, you realize, this might actually be a little TOO dark. But even for all the talk, Negan decides to show that he can also walk the walk by lining up a bunch of our favorite survivors (Rick, Maggie, Glen, among others), saying he will choose one at random to kill. After a quick moment of wondering who it will be, we find out as Negan brings the bat down several times into Glen's skull. The art for this scene is stomach-turning, as we see one of Glen's eyeballs nearly hanging out of its socket, as he tries to scream Maggie's name. Also, at this point in the comic storyline, Maggie is pregnant. This scene once again reminded me that it doesn't matter what medium the story is told in, no one is safe in The Walking Dead universe, so don't ever get too attached.
